Freshers’ Week

Update:

Week went well overall. Feedback to give to future committees would be do have more committee meetings in the run up of and during the week. This to extend up to Fresher’s trip as during this time things change quickly and receive many questions which individuals may not always know how to answer.

Peaks Trip

Update:

Hut not yet paid for.

Cost is expected to be ~£45 per person.

10 cars/drivers – possible option to take an MPV – reduce need for personal cars but will increase per person.

Number of leaders required still outstanding.

Plan to run trip differently to previous years due to increasing numbers of people with none to minimal prior experience. Lawrencefield is proposed location for Saturday. More amenable to setting up of top ropes that can be supervised by leaders, alongside regular trad climbing activities. Hope is to minimise the amount of time people are sat around in the cold. Leaders supervising top ropes can be changed throughout the day as well to equally share the responsibility.

NS and GD to pay hut ASAP

NS to confirm drivers and leader list ASAP

Freshers’ Trip

Overall, the trip was a success.

Friday night – response from leaders re: change in plans due to weather was unacceptable. Some flexibility and willingness to do things that aren’t first choice is needed. And willingness to help other members on committee when asked for.

Going forward organisation and designation of duties/activities will be done by discussion between trip organiser and leaders away from rest of the club on the evening before. Any issues or complaints that arise from this should be raised privately with trip organiser, CS or HS.

Beginner or “easy” walk – wording of this should be changed from being advertised as “short” and “long” as can give wrong impression. Advertising the options as a “low level” walk and a more “technical” walk may be more appropriate.

Given the increased pressures from rapidly rising cost of living is there a way of insuring leaders also have “fun” themselves?

Due to increasing prominence of climbing and outdoors post COViD and Olympics greater proportion of members have limited prior experience to activities club offers. Therefore, may be a need to change how some of the trips/activites are run as currently is very draining for leaders and unsustainable. However, currently unclear what form these adjustments could take.

Fresher’s trip is an anomaly due to demands of the trip. Should be noted that fun can still be had even if not doing one’s preferred activity. (e.g. scramble or walk over climbing)

Item closed, but above points to be revisited throughout the year.

Learn To Belay/Wed Climbing/BUCS Trials

TCA – The Arc were unaware that the club were not planning to run learn to belay there. Furthermore, TCA The Mothership were unaware the club were visiting for the Wed climbing session and so severely unprepared for this. Events like this, though may seem minor, risk undermining our relationship with TCA which the club has worked very hard to improve and maintain in the recent past

More communication from climbing secs to wider committee is needed. Climbing secs also to be present for Wed sessions (i.e. walking from campus to train station).

Learn to belay to be held at redpoint from next Wed for the next 3 weeks

The Arc are offering to do it for free (i.e. no extra cost beyond the entry fee) with ratio of 1:6. To be used for S2.

TH and NS to keep rest of committee in loop re: climbing
