The time has come to nominate yourself to become a faculty rep! Being a faculty rep is an opportunity to make a huge difference at university.
They provide the link between academic reps, the Students’ Union and the University faculty. As a faculty rep, your main role is to gather the wider views of the student population within your faculty.
When I was a postgraduate student at the university, I was the PGT Humanities and Social Science Faculty Rep. I recommend you become a faculty rep too!
The main reason I wanted to be a faculty rep was so I could get involved with academic representation at a high level. I had a voice at regular faculty level meetings, where I felt empowered to voice the student opinion.
SU Staff were really helpful in providing briefings and debriefings for all faculty meetings, and went over any papers that I didn’t understand.
I also got to sit on the Academic Exec with other faculty reps, the SU Education Officer and the SU Postgraduate Officer. This allowed me to gain a fuller understanding of academic issues within the university and to discuss possible solutions.
Something new for the doctoral faculty reps this year is that they will be postgraduate student research champions, working with the University and the SU to organise cross-disciplinary events and engage students with research at the University. This is an amazing opportunity to develop networking skills.
I look forward to sitting on the Academic Exec again, this time as the SU Postgraduate Officer, and working with the new postgraduate faculty reps!
All the best,
Liam, your Postgraduate Officer.
