SU Sport Officer Update

A blog from the outskirts of weekend warm-up

After an awesome summer and an amazing freshers’ week full of some great nights out, fairs and tasters (shoutout to all the sports that hosted my over-competitive self…) , Tom’s back (with Freshers flu) for another blog update!

What have I been working on since my last blog?

SU top ten: We’ve now selected our Top 10 for 2019-20! I’m really excited to see what the university can do in these ten areas. I’ll be leading on the 3G pitch (surprised?) and loneliness.

Black history month: As part of our campus wide black history month, We'll be getting involved with sporting highlights of our amazing black athletes, some current students, some alumni, one Olympian!! Keep your eyes peeled for some amazing events!

Exercise peer mentorship scheme: Last year, the SU piloted the prescription for exercise scheme. This trained and then paired people who were interested in being an exercise buddy with individuals that had been prescribed exercise to improve their mental health. With 100% of the mentees showing clinical signs of mental health improvement in the pilot, this scheme is looking to expand its offer from 16 to 50, but we need your help!!

Through the exercise peer mentorship scheme, your volunteering will help to get an individual involved in regular exercise. Some mentees will have been referred to the scheme, others will simply want to have an exercise buddy! I hope you agree that it's an amazing cause to get involved with! ??

Do something amazing and become an exercise peer mentor here! Get your application in before October 15th!

#InitiatingChange- Socials should be enjoyable for everyone involved. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. We're trying to tackle club drinking culture, by opening conversation up to our committees and finding new solutions to ensure socials are fun, safe and pressure-free! If you feel uncomfortable at a social, please know that you can use the report and support tool confidentially.

#PitchPlease: A successful start to our 3G pitch campaign in September, using our open day to ask the university to commit to building this facility for the prospective students’ start date! If you want to learn more, and get involved, check this out!

Working together for sport: The sports exec and I have been working much more closely with your club committees, getting more open discussion and collaboration going, through working groups and our new committee nights, with the first one dropping in just over a week!

Gender neutral changing facilities: With a new space opening up in Founders hall, I’ll be working with the VC to ensure the university commits to the build of (overdue) gender neutral changing facilities.

Speed dating for sport: If you didn’t manage to get to all the tasters that you wanted to over freshers week, or if you just want to find a sport in a relaxed, recreational, fun setting- look no further! We’re piloting speed dating for sport as part of be well week - two sessions to help you find the sport you love! Sign-ups are almost full so get in quick to avoid disappointment!

Events: As well as Snowball, Varsity, and the (quickly filling, FREE) Rugby at the Rec, there are so many student run events to look forward to! Really excited to see the Boxing and Kickboxing fight night events, as well as the sporting showcase, beginning on October 30th!

Mental health: So much stuff on the cards for the next months: Be well week, mental health training to all your welfare and inclusivity officers in sport (I’m doing a course next week on how to run training sessions on mental health in sport),  collaborating with student services on their mental health campus runs, highlighting sport as a means of improving your mental health, fundraising for a campus wide Movember, getting some dialogue within clubs about mental health.

Looking after your health doesn’t just stop with eating well and exercising! Find the time within your schedule to look after your mental health- check out these resources on how to look after yourself, even if you have limited time!

This is just a slice of what I’ve been up to so far! So happy that campus is once again buzzing! Really excited to see what is in store past week 1! Big love!

What changes would you like to see regarding SU Sport? Find me on campus or email me at SUSport@bath.ac.uk

Hope you're as happy to be back as I was finding out just how bouncy real trampolines are....
