SU Sport Officer Update

Exercise Peer Mentors Explained.

We have a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved with helping others, through exercise! The SU has previously been involved with the Exercise Peer Mentor Scheme and it was created by previous Sports Officer, Andy Galloway (18/19). It is something I was really keen to bring back after a year off due to covid, and the SU and University agreed.

What is a peer mentor?

An Exercise Peer Mentor is someone who supports and motivates students taking part in an exercise programme by accompanying them at the gym, exercise classes or other activities. This takes place alongside three personal trainer sessions at the STV. You and your mentee will be matched on your interests and type of exercise enjoyed.

What is the time commitment?

If you are an active person already, you could encourage your mentee(s) to join you during a fitness session once a week. It doesn’t have to take up any additional time, unless you want it to. Otherwise, we would encourage 1-2 hours physical activity a week, for 8 weeks.

If you are not prepared to do this in Semester 1, but are interested, sign up anyway and you can start later, or even in Semester 2.

What are the benefits as a peer mentor?

This programme is a great addition to your CV, particularly as you can build transferrable skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication and many others. You are also able to meet new people, share your enthusiasm for exercise with these people, and build confidence by helping people and communicating with new people. You will also gain access to tailored training workshops around various topics!

What training is available?

Full training is available for anyone willing to be a part of tis program. The in person session will take place on Monday 1st November 12:15-14:15. There is potential for an additional training session to happen later in Semester 1. You will also have access to relevent resources and also the Peer Support and Student Services Teams.
