Candidate for the position of Sport Officer

Will Galloway

About Me

Hi, I’m Will Galloway (or just Galloway to most of my friends) and I am running for re-election as SU Sport Officer. This year has been amazing from a personal point of view and I’d like to think pretty good for SU Sport as a whole, which is why I want to do it all again!

Playing sport has always been a huge part of my life. I have played basketball now for the best part of 10 years, and also dabbled in a range of other sports with (extremely) varying degrees of success – turns out two left feet aren’t great for the Paso Doble. (There is a terrible video out on the internet somewhere!) Outside of sport, I have a strong interest in music and used to play the saxophone in a jazz band.

The most important thing to know about me is that my time at Bath has been the best years of my life and most of that is owed to sport. I have given back as much possible over my 5 years and if I am re-elected as Sport Officer I will strive to make sure everyone has the same fantastic experience I have enjoyed!

Top 4 Priorities:

  • Getting a 3G pitch – sports facilities are full, we need this development to allow for student demand on facilities.
  • Cost of Sport – I will review all of SU Sport’s finances and University investment ensuring you get value for money.
  • Club Development – I will build the case for a staff position in the SU working on club development.
  • Branding – I will identify a brand for ‘Sport at Bath’ that everyone will feel proud to play under.

View manifesto

Manifesto

This year as Sport Officer I have worked to…

  1. Secure approval for a £3.5m gym expansion.
  2. Support BUCS athletes more than ever before, with additional coaching, strength and conditioning, workshops and physio/massage.
  3. Make over £20,000 available to clubs for recreational sport.
  4. Enable SU Sport to sign the Sport and Recreational Alliance's Mental Health Charter.
  5. Organise our first away Varsity with Cardiff Met and provide very low cost tickets to spectators.

If elected for a second year, I will be able to hit the ground running, working hard throughout the summer with no time spent learning the Officer role.

Many previous manifestos included kit, facilities, committee training, BUCS support, recreational development and Varsity. These are projects that I have developed and will continue to build upon next year. In my second term though, I will bring significant change in areas more difficult to address:

Cost of Sport

Club membership numbers have increased significantly since 2013 but club funding doesn’t mirror that. I will completely review all of SU Sport’s finances, including club budget structure and BUCS fees, providing transparency for the cost of sport and from there make the vital arguments to fund sport to the required levels.

3G!

A 3G pitch was promised in 2014. 3 years, 6 plans, 2 ecological studies later, it still hasn’t happened. Sports facilities are full. Further delay is no longer an option. I will facilitate a student led campaign; petitions, videos, marches, screw it we’ll camp outside the VC’s office if we have to!

Branding

It is individual clubs at Bath that create our unique sporting community. However, I want you and your club to feel a part of something bigger. With SU Sport, Team Bath, etc, there are too many mixed messages. I will work with clubs and students to identify a brand that all groups feel proud to play under.

Liberate clubs

In line with the SU values, club committees should feel empowered.

Committee Training - More comprehensive and in more cases specific to sport clubs – I will organise a Sport Committee Conference

Finance Systems - I will be the strongest advocate of modernising the SU’s finance systems reducing the reliance on paper forms. Think online banking for your club.

Review Office Processes – sport office admin processes are overdue a revamp, improvements will be made such as moving forms online making life easier for committees.

Create a Club Development Scheme

Club development should be more structured; I will advocate for a full-time staff position in our office and create a development scheme.

I could go on forever but I’m only allowed 500 words, some of my other ideas include:

  • Consistently involve student media in sport
  • Increase storage on campus
  • Bring back Score t-shirts
  • Paying student coaches

And loads more as well!
