Event: Feminism 101 Webinar

Friday 25 September 2020 at 1pm - 2pm

Microsoft Teams

This is a beginner’s guide to feminism! What is it? Who is it for? Why do we need it? We will look at the importance of feminism on campus, as well as in the wider world, and consider how sex-based oppression intersects with racism and classism.

In this webinar, we will discuss how we define feminism, both in the Western world and across the globe.

We will be doing some myth-busting around who stands to benefit from feminism, who is (and should be) at the centre of the movement, and whether feminism can actually disadvantage any group.

We will also consider why feminism is still relevant in the 21st century, and how the priorities for women’s liberation have changed throughout the decades, from legalising abortion and the contraceptive pill, to ending period poverty for disadvantaged women and girls.

Feminism in a university context can differ from other social contexts, and we will discuss various campaigns which have taken place within the university to improve sexual health, women’s safety, and attitudes towards sexual violence.

This webinar will also take a look at the basics of the concept of intersectionality, coined by black lawyer and activist Kimberlé Crenshaw, to describe the intersections of sexism, racism and classism. It addresses the overlap between the specific types of oppression faced by women, people of colour, and people of lower socio-economic status. Intersectionality is an essential element of feminism, as it helps us to understand the unique forms of oppression faced by people who are members of more than one of these groups.

Hopefully, by the end of this webinar, you will have an idea about the basics of feminism and you will be keen to learn more by joining our Feminism & Gender Equality society!
