What is The Challenge Zone?

This brand-new trailblazing, 1st of its kind, electrifying and engaging event will certainly have it all and you do not want to miss out. Compete against your new friends in challenges that will have you belly-laughing for the entire academic year. Expect the following features that will make this event one you must attend:

A range of massive inflatables that will provide that WOW factor.
Different viral challenges you will have seen across social media platforms.
A range of exciting challenges designed to test your physical ability, quick reactions, strategic thinking, and much more..
Challenges that are inclusive for all abilities.
A fun and engaging atmosphere where there is lots to try.
Top-charting music from across the years that will give a fantastic buzz all around The Challenge Zone Arena.

Many of our amazing clubs and societies will be at the event running different challenges so get stuck into what they have in store. You can try as much and as little as you like, get down to the Founders Hall for the time of your life! The perfect way to end the week, the perfect event before the Welcome Ball.

Accessibility Information - What can I expect from this event?

This event will take place in the Founders Hall. The event is expected to be busy and crowded and is expected to have high levels of noise. This is due to the potential capacity of students, the inflatables and the music. There will be no food or drink on sale at this event. Please expect potential queuing on entry to the event depending on capacity.

The Founders Hall has full wheelchair access as it is accessible from the paths across the University by the Bus Arrivals’ Square. Anyone in a wheelchair can still get involved in the majority of challenges involved within the event. Our Freshers’ Week Captains in Green T-Shirts will be spotted at the event, please use them for any information or queries you might have. You do not need any prior experience for this event. No particular clothing is needed, for example, you don’t need to be in sport related kit unless you wish too. Regular everyday clothing is fine.

Join the Mountaineering Club to discover the famous Bath Skyline Walk. The route should take 3 hours, is relatively flat and has some great views over the city! Meet the committee outside The Library, who will guide you on this route.

This event is open to ALL freshers and you do not need a ticket to attend! However, you may be required to check in upon arrival so please bring your student card with you.

No prior experience is necessary but don't forget to wear sturdy footwear and bring a torch, water and a jacket! Please be aware that this walk may involve some sections through woodland which is likely to be slippery and muddy underfoot and is likely to involve climbing under/over fallen trees. This event has no limit on attendees so it may be busy.

Boardgames and Biscuits is a great opportunity to make new friends or deepen already forged friendships in an incredibly beginner friendly event! From the family classics of Pandemic and Codenames, to the deeper picks of Terraforming Mars and Dominion, our 80+ boardgame collection has something for everyone! Feel free to come alone as you’ll meet people in no-time or bring a buddy to share the fun! Tabletop Committee will be present throughout to help you ease in, provide any suggestions and to teach you any game you don’t understand. There will be different biscuits available, to suit the dietary needs of different individuals. Overall, this event is a great alcohol-free option for anyone wanting an entertaining gaming experience whilst also meeting new people.

This event will take place in the Plug. This facility sales alcoholic and alcohol-free drinks. The event will be mildly busy so noise levels are undetermined. This is due to a potential capacity of students. For accessibility, the Tabletop Committee will be there to help anyone with any problems they may have, most expect an ability to see and fine hand motor skills, support will be on hand. The Plug has full wheelchair access there are double-width, automatic doors on entrance to the SU space. There is a lift up to the Plug. The Plug will have seating and tables to access the games. Toilet facilities are available within the building. Our Freshers’ Week Captains in Green T-Shirts will be spotted at the event, please use them for any information or queries you might have. You do not need any prior experience for this event.

Are you a chess fanatic or want to learn how to play Chess. Either way, Casual Chess is open to all Freshers’, regardless of skill and experience levels! The event will be hosted by the Chess Society (ChessSoc), as they provide a fantastic, welcoming chess-playing environment where they will kindly be providing chess sets, as well as clocks for those who want a more competitive spin, so just turn up and play anytime during the event's duration. In addition to regular chess, there will also be chess variants such as Bughouse as well as Hand & Brain for those wanting a more adventurous style of Chess playing. The event will allow those involved to chill and relax whilst playing an interesting game, in a nice outdoor environment whilst making new friends in the process.

This event will take place on The Chancellors Green. The event will be calmer event so noise levels are estimated to be lower. This is due to expected lower capacities of Freshers’ attending as well as the nature of the activity being one in which has a calm and relaxing manner. Wheelchair access is easy due to the location being outside and easily accessible along the regular paths across the University Campus.

If forecasted weather is poor, there are plans to move the event elsewhere. If this can’t happen, the event may be postponed or cancelled. No prior experience is required.

What is Campus Monopoly?

Do you think you know all the best spots on campus? Think again! This action-packed wide game is a chance to visit all the iconic landmarks of the University, with a fabulous prize on the line. Don’t worry if you don’t know your way around just yet! We will make sure there is at least one returner on your team to help you! This event is ran by the awesome Bath University Guides & Scouts. The BUGS Monopoly Run is a wide game that involves trekking around campus and taking photos with your team at different locations to win Monopoly money. You will need to strategize to balance getting as many points as possible alongside the time constraints that may hinder your chances of winning. The team with the most money wins a prize! You can bring your new friends or come by yourself! This is a great opportunity to find out about the awesome locations that are spread across our fantastic campus, find our amazing SU spaces where exciting events will be held during the week, and meet new people and make new friends!

This event will take place across a wide range of locations around campus with the meeting point being on The Chancellors Green. You will be in teams where numbers will likely average around 3-5 people per team. The event will be mildly busy so noise levels are undetermined. This is due to the potential higher-end capacity of Freshers’ involved as well as the different locations, where we can’t guarantee the noise levels of these locations. Due to the different locations involved, wheelchair access is not available for 1 of the locations on the Campus Monopoly. The amazing Bath University Guides & Scouts team will make you aware of that particular location if you are in a wheelchair. The rest of the locations will have full access for any wheelchair users across the campus.

This event will be hosted outside so please wear appropriate clothing for the weather. If the weather is forecasted with levels of extreme weather, this event may be postponed or cancelled. You do not need any prior experience for this event. Our FW Captains will be spotted in Green T-Shirts from the beginning of the event so please raise any concerns with them.

What is a Postgraduate Mixer?

This event will allow you to meet other postgraduate students, this can be from your course of study or a different course of study. Either way, this is a fantastic opportunity to chuck yourselves in the deep end to meet similar people, who you can really relate to, and find your people on the first weekend in Bath. Feeling slightly anxious about meeting new people, that is totally normal and we will help with that. We will have SU Staff, SU officers and Freshers’ Week Captains on hand to ensure you are okay and mingling. There will also be icebreaker activities so you can ensure that there are minimal silences and maximal smiles. We highly believe that this is a fantastic opportunity to meet people, so get down to the Founders Hall and build relationships with amazing people.

This event is open to Postgraduates only from all courses of study. This event is Unticked and Free so please turn up when you like within the time advertised. You can enter and leave the event as much as you like. You will be required to check in upon arrival so please bring your student card with you.

We know your smart, you’re a postgrad, but are you smart enough to survive these questions. It’ll test your brain power, but you’ve got help. OTHER POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS! Get down to the Edge for a fun and amusing evening of question answering, plenty of smiles and good vibes. You can turn up on your own or with other postgraduates, either way you’ll be split into even teams and compete for the bragging rights of ‘The Postgraduate Quiz Champions!’. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet your fellow postgrads early in the week and build fantastic and long-lasting relationships whilst more importantly, working together towards a common goal. A quiz of many categories so it is really for everyone. Can you bring your team to victory?

Not a more relaxing place to be on a Saturday afternoon as you get together to eat, pause, and chat. Get down to the fantastic Parade Gardens for a lovely gathering of like-minded people as you digest and relax for what has been an exciting week in a new environment. This event is specifically for postgraduate students, get your favourite food and drink and head down to the Parade Gardens (full location details are in the overview section and here: Google Maps Link). Keep a look out for our FW Captains in Green T-Shirts who are around to make sure you know where to go. So postgrads, get your lunch and head down for a worthwhile and relaxing picnic.

Postgraduate Pub and Bar Tour

Get stuck into some proper British culture as you tour some of the best Pubs and Bars that Bath has to offer. The meet point for this event is outside the front doors of the Bath Abbey (full location details are in the overview section and here: Google Maps Link). This event is exclusively for postgraduate students and will provide a scenic evening stroll through the city, whilst connecting with new people and having a nice, refreshing beverage at each stop if you wish. Find your new favourite pub or bar, our amazing FW Captains will lead you on the path from location to location. At each stop, you can drink whatever you like, The SU respects and encourages everyone to set their own volume and we believe that you do not need alcohol to have a good time! If you want to connect with fellow Postgrads whilst enjoying a slither of British heritage, this is an event for you.

This event is ticketed and open to Postgraduates only. This event is FREE but is ticketed to ensure the tour runs logistically. Drinks at each stop ARE NOT included within the ticket purchased. Accessibility Information - What can I expect from this event?

This event will take place in the city across different locations. The tour involves visiting pubs and bars where alcohol is on sale, and members of the public will likely be present. The group will stop at four different venues for an hour each with a specified route and timings led by the Freshers' Week Captain volunteers present at the event. Some venues may offer food and all offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The event may become busy so noise levels are undetermined. This is due to potential music at the different locations, members of the public where we can’t guarantee their levels of noise, and the capacity of people in each location.

For wheelchair access, the route is relatively steep so may be elements of the tour that may be more tricky than others. If you are in a wheelchair and want to get involved, please email fwem@bath.ac.uk for information so we can help in anyway we can.

Depending on forecasted weather conditions, please also wear appropriate clothing.

Accessibility Information – What can I expect from this event?

Unfortunately the nature of Bath and the locations we visit mean the tour isn't wheelchair friendly, but otherwise, all are welcome. The tour takes almost 2 hours and the distance is around about 1 and a quarter miles – make sure to wear some sensible footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather.

End your Freshers’ Week on a high as you look into the stars and reflect on a fantastic first week in Bath.

Stargazing

Explore the planets and stars in this wholesome and enjoyable stargazing experience. Hosted by Bath Space Society (SpaceSoc), this is great opportunity to meet people in a calm and relaxing setting, or with your newly made friends. Telescopes will be on hand, alongside the committee who will be able to answer your space related questions.

If you’re a fan of hot chocolate, make sure to bring your mugs and take advantage of the free hot chocolate available. Remember to wrap up warm with your favourite snacks, and feel free to bring picnic blankets or something to sit on. If you’re looking for a wholesome event or need a breath of fresh air before your first day of study, then get stuck in and see what’s on offer - feel free to join at any time until 22:30.

This event is open to ALL freshers and you do not need a ticket to attend! However, you will be required to check in upon arrival so please bring your student card with you.

Accessibility Information – What can I expect from this event?

This is a relaxed, low noise event which will take place outdoors by The Lake on campus. The number of attendees is not limited, so there may be a large group present however, the event will remain low noise. As this is a night-time event, lighting will be limited to preserve vision for stargazing. Limited seating may be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs or picnic blankets. Committee members and Freshers' Week Captains will be on hand to help attendees. They will be wearing high visibility jackets.

Join us for a tour of a handful of the fantastic charity shops Bath has to offer!

Charity Shop Tour

Do you love charity shopping? Do you love finding a bargain? Is shopping for clothing sustainably important to you? If any of the above apply, this tour is for you! Follow our Freshers’ Week Captains as they show you a handful of the charity shops in the city centre and spend a little time in each one in search for your next pre-loved item of clothing.

This event is open to ALL freshers and you do not need a ticket to attend! However, you will be required to check in upon arrival so please bring your student card with you (this may also be useful for student discounts!)

Please do not bring food and drink on this tour as some charity shops we are visiting do not permit this. Captains will make sure we maintain respectful behaviour during the tour so please cooperate with them. On this note, each shop is expecting students for 15 minutes at a time, captains will let you know when you will be moving to the next shop so all you have to do is follow their lead!

The number of people visiting each shop at a time does need to be limited, so captains may split up the group into smaller groups and take alternative routes. This is to make sure the shops are not overwhelmed, and Health and Safety requirements are adhered to. Please bear with Captains as they work to make the tour safe and fun for everyone!

Accessibility Information – What can I expect from this event?

Tours do not have a limited number of participants who can turn up, so the meeting point may be busy. However, the maximum tour group size is 10, so the group may be split up at the tour start. There could be a high level of noise from the city, which gets busy with large groups of people at times.

Tours will involve walking in a group with Captains and students and going into a variety of charity shops. You are not required to make purchases in any of the shops. You may wish to talk to others on the tour. You will not be expected to speak to anyone if you do not wish to.

If you need a break, then please let a Captain know. If you wish to leave the tour, you may do so, you do not need to inform a Captain but can speak to them if you have any concerns or queries before you leave.

The route for this tour is predominantly flat and does not involve steep paths.

This event will be hosted in The Weston Studio and in the Edge Event Space in The Edge Building. The event will be mildly busy so noise levels are undetermined. This is due to the unknown number of students involved in the event. Usually, people walk around and talk to each other during the event, but walking isn't necessary and BUST can accommodate for anyone. The Edge has full wheelchair access as there are both steps and a ramp leading to the building entrance (with The Weston Studio being situated on the same floor as the entrance), complemented by double-width, automatic doors. A guided urban tree walk around the River Avon in central Bath

Riverside Ramble Tree Walk

Following the route of one of Bath’s Urban Tree Trails, this walk explores the variety of native and exotic trees which are literally 'hiding in plain sight' amongst the magnificent architecture of central Bath.

It is led by Hugh Williamson, a member of Bath Urban Treescape. The walk starts outside Green Park Station and meanders around the city centre and along the river.

This event is ticketed and open to ALL freshers. Tickets are FREE and will be on sale here from Wednesday 2 September. Capacity is limited so purchase early to avoid missing out. All tickets are non refundable. Visit our tickets page for more details.

Participants are advised to arrive at least 10 minutes early for check-in, as the tour will set off at promptly 12:00pm.

Accessibility Information - What can I expect from this event?

The walk is mainly on pavements, is mainly flat, with a couple of sets of steps and covers about one and half miles. Assistant dogs and dogs under close control are welcome. All children under 16 must be accompanied. Any foraging by participants is done at their own risk. Don’t forget to wear sensible shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather – bring a raincoat if it looks like it might rain!

This event will take place around the city. This will be calmer event, but noise levels are undetermined due to the nature of the event moving around the city. We cannot predict the level of noise within the city, or how busy town may be. However the group will be small, only around 20 people.

The Freshers’ Fair is a busy event with lots of stalls from companies and organisations looking to connect with students. You can expect it to be busy and loud and can expect some queuing. You can go around the fair in your own pace and there is a one way system. You can choose whether or not to interact with stalls. Some stalls will have games and activations that you can play and some will just have information. The queue and some stalls will be outside so please be prepared for the weather.

The SU is delighted to invite you to our Impact Report and Top Ten launch event.

As September fast approaches and we prepare to welcome a new academic year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on everything achieved during the 2025/26 academic year. The SU Annual Impact Report 2025/26 highlights the achievements of The SU and our members, showcasing the positive impact this has had on the student experience.

This event also provides an opportunity to look ahead to the year ahead, with The SU Officer Team introducing The SU Top Ten priority issues for 2026/27. The Top Ten is a set of priority issues that The SU works on directly with the University. If you're not familiar with The SU Top Ten you can find out more on our website. Top Ten.

Join us as we celebrate the successes of the past year and look ahead to the opportunities and priorities that will shape the year to come.

SU Trips - Cardiff (including Castle) (14/11/2026, 08:00)

Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and full of history, culture and exciting attractions. We'll start the morning with a walk around the medieval Cardiff castle (included in your ticket), perched above the city, surrounded by parklands, and rolling views!

Then, continue your historic visit with a short walk into the centre, where you'll find a blended atmosphere of old meets new, with plenty of places to eat, drink and shop.

Don't forget to visit the National Museum of Cardiff, Llandaff Cathedral, Alexandra Park and many more attractions. There's plenty to see and do, all within walking distance.

Important information:

The times listed on the event are from when the coach will leave the campus in the morning, until an approximate arrival back to Bath. You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure, for boarding, in order to ensure the coach leaves on time. Arrival times to the destination and back to Bath are subject to traffic, weather and road conditions, which are beyond our control, so we cannot guarantee exact time/s of arrival.
The trips will go ahead regardless of weather conditions, so please do come prepared. This excludes extreme or dangerous weather, where we would, of course, cancel for your safety. In the event that we cancel the trip, you would be fully refunded.
If you can no longer attend the trip, you may transfer your ticket to another student. Please ensure you inform us in writing to su-trips@bath.ac.uk at least 24 hours before departure time. Also, quite often we have a waiting list so we may be able to put you in contact with a student waiting for a ticket.
