Last week, members of our community braved a pandemic and torrential rain to raise money for their Big Four charities.
On Sunday 15 March, 32 student volunteers braved the elements (and Coronavirus) to run the Bath Half Marathon. Every year, Bath RAG, one of our Student Groups, pick four main charities to concentrate their fundraising efforts on. This year, we’ve been lucky enough to work with Wicked Weather Watch, Bath Samaritans, Great Western Air Ambulance and Genesis Trust.
Talking about the event, Charlotte Elliott, who was paramount to making sure the event was a success said: “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate all the RAG running team for their fantastic efforts in fundraising and completing the Bath Half marathon. It was quite a year! Despite concerns around the Coronavirus and torrential rain on the day there was still a great buzz and sense of camaraderie in the RAG tent.”
What’s really striking about these sorts of events is the impact that they have on our Big Four charities. Every year, the Big Four charities are chosen because they mean a lot to our community of students, and it’s been incredible to see the impact that RAG’s fundraising has on them.
One of the Big Four charities we were running for on the day was Genesis Trust. Genesis Trust is a charity based in Bath with the aim to make the world just that little bit better for homeless and vulnerable people. Before the event, we had the opportunity to catch up with Hilary Long from Genesis Trust, when she told us “every penny you raise will make such a difference to the homeless people we support… just know that every step you take on the day will make a difference.” It brings a tear to our eye just reading it!
Despite the Coronavirus controversy of the Bath Half 2020, and whether or not you agree that the race went ahead, we should not hesitate to celebrate the huge achievement of all of the runners and the huge amount of money they’re raising for charities up and down the country.
We’re delighted to announce that Bath RAG have raised over £3500 for our Big Four! Congratulations to all the runners for being more athletic that we could ever dream of, and for some outstanding fundraising.
