Cocktail Preparation

?Equipment list (and some alternatives you can find in your kitchen!)

  • A Boston Shaker: For shaking up your cocktails! A protein shaker, jar or any other vessel with a watertight lid on it will be just fine!
  • A ‘jigger’ measure: The hourglass- shaped measure that you see at all bars, usually a single (25ml) and double (50ml) measure, but a shot-glass or an egg cup will do!
  • A Bar Spoon: Used for the smaller measures of ingredients, and mixing! Use a teaspoon for the measurement, and a stirrer, chopstick, finger, end of a wooden spoon.
  • A Muddler: needed to bruise, crush and muddle fruits and peel. The end of a wooden spoon will do just fine!
  • A Strainer: something to separate the ice from the cocktail, once we’re done shaking! A tea strainer, small sieve, the hole of your protein shaker, or a jar lid with holes poked through (if it’s the right size!)
  • A Zester: We’re going to want some larger bits of zest for use in the cocktail and for garnishing after. A potato peeler, sharp knife, or mandolin (The slicey bit of a grater) will do just fine, but be careful with fingers/hands please!
  • Gomme Syrup: We’re going to need to make a bit of Gomme/sugar syrup/sugar solution here- dissolve sugar in hot water (1 cup of water for 1.5-2 cups of sugar) and allow it to cool. If you don’t have time, you can buy gomme online, or just use granulated sugar and dissolve it in the alcohol/juices before you add any ice!
  • ICE!! You’ll need plenty of ice!

Don’t drink alcohol? No problem! We’ve got 2 options for you, that should result in booze-free, yummy Mocktails:

Non-alcoholic spirits: If you want to treat yourself, grab a bottle of non-alcoholic spirit (I’d recommend Seedlip, more specifically, Grove 42, for it’s citrusy notes)! Follow the alcoholic recipe, replacing the spirits with Non-alcoholic spirits, and replace prosecco with soda!

Mocktail Recipes: If you don’t want to invest in a bottle of non-alcoholic spirit, there will be an alternative mocktail ingredients list below each cocktail list!

In this session we will be making a Daiquiri and a Berry Fizz.

Ingredients

Daiquiri

The Daiquiri is an absolute classic, and is a really versatile rum-based cocktail, with 2 styles you can opt for, depending on your equipment:

  • Frozen daiquiri- You’ll need a good blender that can blend ice easily!
  • ‘Classic style’- You’ll be muddling the fruit (if you choose to use any) and shaking with ice, so won’t need a blender!
  • 50ml white rum (or 35ml Non-alcoholic spirit),
  • 25ml Lime juice,
  • 25ml Gomme,
  • Personalize with your favourite fruits (strawberry is a classic, but I quite like raspberry too!)

Mocktail - Virgin strawberry Daiquiri

  • 15ml Lime juice
  • 15ml Gomme
  • A handful of strawberries (frozen if you’re blending, fresh if you’re not)
  • 50ml soda water or elderflower pressé

Berry Fizz

This one is a sophisticated, delicate cocktail, and is a really nice one if you’re entertaining a lot of guests. It can be made up with any berries really- I think strawberries, cranberries, blackberries or raspberries work best!

  • 100ml Prosecco (or elderflower pressé)
  • 25ml Gin or Vodka (or non-alcoholic spirit)
  • Your chosen berry (about a thumb-sized portion- maybe one strawberry, or 2 raspberries, etc)
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • 15ml Gomme

Mocktail-Berry fizz

I love the subtle elderflower here; soda works really nicely too!

  • 100ml elderflower pressé or soda water
  • Your chosen berry (about a palm-sized portion- 2 strawberries, 4 raspberries, etc)
  • 2 tsp Lemon juice
  • 10ml Gomme
