Who We Are
We are a group of enthusiastic, politically engaged students who aim to promote the values of the Liberal Democrats, in a fun and friendly environment.
We believe in building and safeguarding a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full.
What We Do
As part of politics and activism, we want to encourage more young people to become politically engaged and stand up for what they believe in. As a society at the university, we think this creates an easy-access platform for people to do this. Following the most recent national, local and European elections, we now have a yellow seat in Parliament, as well as a local council run by the Liberal Democrats.
In the past we have hosted our local MP, Wera Hobhouse, to speak at the university, campaigned in a variety of local by-elections, the 2018 local elections in Cheltenham (alongside Vince Cable!) and in the General Election. We participated in the campaign to push for a people's vote on the final Brexit deal, by joining thousands of others to march in London in October and March. We also joined the local party in preparing for the May 2019 Bath & North East Somerset council elections, and enjoyed seeing our efforts pay off! In the past we have also attended the national Lib Dem party conference as a group. If you'd like to see more details of our past activities, you can head over to our facebook page @BathUniLDs
We hope this year to continue working with the national and local party, promoting the importance of participation in politics on campus, and of course promoting our liberal values in these nationally turbulent times. In the new Covid era, we will be looking to host online events with speakers, as well as organising some social events for like-minded liberals to chat politics in a relaxed environment.
We hope to promote gender equality in politics, and, as highlighted by our constitution, we have created Liberations officer roles including: Women's, LGBT, BME and Disability Awareness Officer roles.
On a side note, our socials are always friendly and inclusive - we enjoy a good beer (or other drink!) in the sun, discussing politics, whilst also giving everyone an opportunity to debate their ideas in a non-judgemental environment. We are also open to collaborating with other Bath SU societies and in this past year we have taken part in some events run by Bath University Debating Society.
