Who We Are
We are a group of enthusiastic, politically engaged students who aim to promote the ideas of the Liberal Democrats, in a fun and friendly environment. We are a relatively new group, having only just come into being last year and we hope to see lots of new and familiar faces.
We believe in building and safeguarding a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full.
What We Do
As part of politics and activism, we want to encourage more young people to become politically engaged and stand up for what they believe in. As a society at the university, we think this creates an easy-access platform for people to do this. Following the most recent national, local and European elections, we now have a yellow seat in Parliament, as well as a local council run by the Liberal Democrats, along with some Liberal Democrats representation of our South West region in European Parliament also.
In the past we have hosted our local MP, Wera Hobhouse, to speak at the university, campaigned in a variety of local by-elections, the 2018 local elections in Cheltenham (alongside Vince Cable!) and the General Election. This past year we participated in the campaign to push for a people's vote on the final Brexit deal, by joining thousands of others to march in London in October and March. We also joined the local party in preparing for the May 2019 Bath & North East Somerset council elections, and enjoyed seeing our efforts pay off!
We hope this year to continue working with the national and local party, promoting the importance of participation in politics on campus, and of course promoting our liberal values in these nationally turbulent times. We are currently working with the national People’s Vote campaign and hope to also participate in events such as the ‘Let us be heard’ march taking place in London on 19th October this year.
We want to promote Liberal Democrat policy, and help them continue to grow in success, as the party for all people that don't believe in a strong Brexit or in current government policy.
We hope to promote gender equality in politics, and, as highlighted by our constitution, we have created Liberations officer roles including: Women's, LGBT, BME and Disability Awareness Officer roles.
On a side note, we have had some good socials - we enjoy a good beer in the sun, discussing politics, whilst also giving everyone an opportunity to debate their ideas in a non-judgemental environment. We are also open to collaborating with other Bath SU societies and in this past year we have taken part in some events run by Bath University Debating Society.
