Personal Resilience - Managers Forum
Mandy Wilson-Garner
Last week (6th Feb) Becky and I attended the University Managers Forum where the session was on Personal Resilience. Please see the links below showing the power point presentation that was given and also the link to a questionnaire which you can fill in to find out how resilient you are. You receive an on-line report which I know Becky and I found very useful as a self-reflection tool.
Overall the session was very interesting. We discussed the stress caused by change and how people can learn to be more resilient to change. The characteristics of a resilient person were outlined. Interestingly the most resilient person was identified as Nelson Mandela. Perhaps no surprise there but this session was not just about famous resilient people but about the need to adapt to change in any organisation and how people can learn the skills to adapt. It also covered the Management side of identifying staff who are less resilient and how to help them through periods of change.
Resilience questionnaire and model - to find out more about what you rely on for your own resilience and what might help you enhance this. The link is on the main SD web page at:

Also a reminder that there are lots of resources on this topic in the **Development Toolkit** at:

*Personal Performance/Personal well-being and stress*
and for tips on helping teams and individuals, see: '**Managing people/safety and well-being** section'.

An Environmental BUSU
Mandy Wilson-Garner
As you are all aware BUSU is currently working with the University on its Carbon Management Plan. The national HEFCE (
http://www.hefce.ac.uk/) carbon reduction target is 43% by 2020; the current Uni target is 19% by 2015. The Carbon Management Plan can be found at
http://www.bath.ac.uk/estates/energy/carbonsummary.shtml.
Paul/David and I have now compiled two environmental check lists that will soon be circulated via your Line Managers. The first of the two is for the team to discuss at your next team meeting and covers good environmental practices in your offices. This one will be followed by a second one for everyone to fill in. This one covers the main environmental impacts of your job role. Each staff member will be asked to consider aspects of their role which may have an impact on the environmental and how they can put measures into place to mitigate the impacts identified.
Becoming a more environmental Students' Union will require us all to work together. Many thanks in advance for your completion of these checklists.

Mind Trap
1. Shadow asked his secretary to make him a coffee. While the secretary was making the coffee, her clip-on earring fell into the cup. Even though the cup had coffee in it, the earing didn't get wet. How is it possible?
2. If a doctor gives you three pills and tells you to take one pill every half hour, how long will they last?
3. Which is correct to say, "The yolk of the egg are white' or, 'The yolk of the egg is white'?
