BUSU Statement - Roman Romp

The following is a statement released from the SU regarding the Roman Romp

This year the Students’ Union supported the decision, made by Rag, not to run the Roman Romp. Rag made this difficult decision for a number of reasons, primarily that the decrease in financial support from large graduate recruiters and the local licensed trade meant that the event was no longer a viable charity fundraiser, but also because an event such as this carries with it a significant number of health and safety issues.

With Rag running the event, a great deal of time, effort and expense was spent trying to ensure that the event was controlled and had the support of the relevant bodies, meaning that it could go ahead with minimal impact on the local community.

Any form of Roman Romp that goes ahead this year will not be organised by Rag, and therefore will have no marshals, no first aid available, no extra buses and no support from the local licensing authority or the local police. These events will therefore carry no support from the Students’ Union or the University.

The Students’ Union is aware that some students will feel passionate about the Roman Romp and will want to keep the tradition alive. However, an unsupported, un-marshalled, un-coordinated mass pub crawl is not without its risks both to individuals and to the reputation of the student community as a whole.

8:17am on 5 May 09
Yet another bath uni tradition destroyed in the name of 'health and safety'. As far as I can tell, the risks involved are 1) getting drunk and 2) getting cold. So, nothing that wouldn't happen on a normal night out in December then?

I'd happily sign a waiver saying 'If I end up in hospital it's my own stupid fault' if it meant this unique event could continue for future years.

Every attempt at a decent event seems to have been watered down to a shoddy night out on campus. There are simply no alternatives any more. MusicSoc weren't even allowed to sell tickets for the battle of the bands final in plug because the event was being held at Moles. The SU simply wont support anything thats not going to bring them in drink revenue via elements/plug, I have a suspicion that's the real agenda here.

12:31pm on 28 Apr 09
I realise that this has caused a lot of uproar among students. I can confirm that it was Rag that made the decision. A lot of discussion was had and it was a very difficult decision that had to be made.

If people would like to suggest new events that Rag can run, we are more than happy to listen and take on board new suggestions.

Kirsty

Rag Chair 08/09
