The Bath University Model United Nations society is organizing its first conference on the 16th- 18th April 2010.  It will be a decade since the 2000 agenda and 9 years since the millennium development goals were agreed and with a new decade to face, the theme of the BathMUN 2010 conference will be looking at what the UN should achieve in the next decade. About 100 delegates from the University of Bath and other renowned UK universities are expected.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the real United Nations. Students assume the roles of diplomats, representing different nations in the respective United Nations Committees, and discuss issues of global importance, trying to bring solutions to them. MUN familiarizes students with the work of the United Nations, but also allows them to improve the communication, teamwork and negotiation skills and expands their knowledge of world issues and their possible solutions.

BathMUN 2010 will host three different committees and the Security Council
• The Economic and Financial (ECOFIN) will be looking at the future of the international financial system and the tackling of corruption and the transfer of illicit assets
• The Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) will look at the establishment of a nuclear weapon free-zone in the Middle East and at the problems arising from the accumulation of conventional ammunition stockpiles.
• The Human Rights Council (HRC) will discuss the situation of human rights in Honduras since the coup d'etat of 28 June 2009 and at protection of human rights in areas of ethnic and regional conflict.
• And the Security Council will focus on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and tackling the issue of high-seas piracy in the Republic of Somalia
The challenges of the committees are suitable for both complete beginners and experienced delegates. It is a great opportunity for Bath University students to try out MUN debating, as the conference will be held on campus at a reduced cost of £12, and BUMUN society will be providing them with information and training sessions prior to the conference.

More information on the conference can be found at www.bathmun.org.uk

To register for the conference visit the BUMUN society’s page: http://www.bathstudent.com/socs/societies/bumun/ and purchase the subsidized registration product for £12 (you will have to log in with your BUCS username and password to access the product). The BUMUN Committee will be holding training session on Tuesday, the 13th of April at 6.15 in 5W2.1. All interested students are encouraged to attend this training session for more information on BUMUN and training to help them successfully participate in the conference.
