On 20 February, members of SUmmitt met for their second meeting of the year.
The SUmmit is an SU committee made up of a range of student leaders and representatives who vote to create Standpoints (SU stances on any given issue) and hold the SU Officers accountable. Their key functions are to discuss, agree and amend proposed Standpoints, discuss topical issues, receive updates from SU Officers and student groups and create a network of student leaders.
Their second meeting of the year involved SU Officers updating members of SUmmit on projects and topical issues, as well as discussing several Standpoint proposals. You can read the
minutes of the meeting.
For one particular Standpoint, SUmmit members agreed to ask the student body for written statements regarding one of the Standpoint proposals. Can all interested students please provide statements of support, opposition or neutrality relating to the following Standpoint proposal:
The SU believes the curriculum for certain courses need to be revised to accommodate students under 18.
The proposer’s rationale behind this statement is that, for certain courses, first years need to be part of research experiments, but their scope is limited if they are under 18. The proposer believes that by modifying syllabus,’ under 18s students will benefit. During SUmmit, it was discussed that under 18s, who often also happen to be international students, cannot access all opportunities or course content in some of their courses.
The example of psychology was given, in which, in line with ethics approval, some dissertation topics are not available to under 18s, which acts as a barrier.
You can read the discussion by SUmmit members about this proposal in the
minutes under item 5.2. If you have any thoughts about this, please email
ideastoaction@bath.ac.uk by March 21. The statements will be collated anonymously and shared with the SUmmit committee to inform their vote at their next meeting.
SUmmit is particularly keen to hear from you if you are currently under 18 or were under 18 when you started your course.
Thank you for getting involved!
