Choral and Orchestral Society take part in professional master class with military band

We love to see our student groups provide exciting opportunities for their members to get involved in and develop their skills. On Saturday 14 April, the Choral and Orchestral society’s (ChaOS) Concert Band took part in a day long master class with professional military band The Band and Bugles of the Rifles.

The master class was a unique chance not only to gain professional experience but to also give the band the opportunity to play in a large  group of nearly 70 musicians. ChaOs Concert Band were able to work closely with members of the military band, gaining insightful knowledge on how to improve their performance.

The professional military band are based in Winchester and perform worldwide as part of the British Army.

Andrew Hall, Musical Director of ChaOS Concert Band said “Having a professional military band come and give a workshop at the University was an extremely valuable and rewarding experience for all of our band”.

“Working closely with the military musicians meant that our players were able to get expert help and advice on their instruments, in a way that would be impossible in a normal rehearsal”.

“I personally found that I learned a lot from working alongside the professional band and their conductor, gaining experience that will greatly assist me in future rehearsals with the University Concert Band”.

“We are very grateful to The Band and Bugles of the Rifles for giving us this unique opportunity”.

ChaOS Concert Band and The Band and Bugles of the Rifles played together, performing the student groups’ own music as well as trying challenging music from the military band’s repertoire.

Josh Davis, ChaOS member said “… I felt the joint rehearsal with the Band of the Rifles was a fantastic experience.”

“It was very beneficial to have professional musicians near me to give advice on my playing and, in my opinion, the joint band made a fantastic sound at the end!”

The Concert Band will be one of the eight ensembles performing at the ChaOS Spring Concert on 28 April at St. Swithin’s Church. Check out their Facebook event to find out more information.
