The Edge has been a central part of creative life on campus for the last five years, and has seen countless outstanding student and professional shows, exhibitions and performances during that time. With the many changes that have taken place this year due to the global pandemic, the Edge has had to adapt, and embrace a new way of working. Therefore it is a welcome light in the darkness of 2020 that we can announce that the Edge is now under the management of the Students’ Union, and as such will have a strong student priority and focus in the future. The SU Activities Team are now based at the Edge, so (Covid permitting) you can find those familiar faces on Level 2.

As part of this move across to the SU, there is now a new, dedicated SU Arts Team to support and champion student arts activity on and off campus. The Arts Team will manage the Edge spaces for student use (Edge Theatre, Weston Studio, Art Studio, Dance Studio, Ensemble Room and other smaller practice rooms), support societies with shows, performances and projects, as well as plan and offer a programme of arts activity for all students to engage with. This will include the revival of room bookings for individuals and groups, music tuition, classes, wellbeing activities and more!

The SU and University are working together towards a new arts strategy, currently in the consultation period. As part of this we will be asking students and student groups for feedback on how they want to use the Edge, what they’d like to see happen in the building, and any ideas for future projects. Watch this space for more info!

2020 has been a year of huge change, uncertainty, highs and lows, so we look forward to relaunching the Edge with a fully-fledged arts programme for all students to access. In the meantime, please bear with us as we begin to slowly reopen the building in Semester 2 according to relevant Covid guidelines, and as we start to offer arts activities and opportunities throughout the rest of the academic year.

If you have any thoughts on what you’d like to see at the Edge, or how you think we could use it, drop us a line on su-arts@bath.ac.uk. We look forward to hearing from you!
