On Thursday 8 November, University Radio Bath past and present descended on the indigo at The O2 for the Student Radio Awards.

URB members, as their reputation preceded them, were at the star-studded ceremony in full force. A staggering 30 current members and alumni made their way to London for the event, all with the hope of URB picking up a nationally-acclaimed award.

Of the five hundred entries across sixteen categories, URB was up for two awards. Ryan Arnold, for Best Interview, for his interview with Frank Turner, and Mitch Thorngate for Best Newcomer. To even be nominated for a Student Radio Award is a tremendous achievement in itself, both Ryan and Mitch deserve a massive congratulations as the nominations put them in the TOP 6 in the UK for their categories.

As the Bronze and Silver places for Best Newcomer were being announced, hearts raced and tensions grew in an almost synchronised fashion, the anticipation and excitement building. Even before Mitch’s surname had been read out, the URB contingent blew the roof off The O2 with incredible cheers and celebrations. Mitch took to the stage to be presented his award, giving a very heartfelt thank you speech, and making sure to give a shoutout to URB, and of course his dear Mum and Dad back in South Wales.

"I was absolutely thrilled to win the award, and hopefully is the beginning of something bigger. URB and Student Media at Bath has truly transformed my life and has made me feel so welcome. I could not have done it if it weren't for the support of my committee from last year, and the backing of the Media Executive", Mitch has said of his fantastic achievement.

The whole of University Radio Bath, Student Media, and The SU are incredibly proud of Mitch and his award, and we look forward to many more nominations and (fingers crossed) award wins in the years to come!
