Every year we have around 100 students volunteer time to help out during one of the biggest weeks of the academic year. You might remember the Captains in their green t-shirts from your own Freshers' Week, and they play such a vital role and without them, we wouldn't be able to pull off Freshers' Week!
Captains are a group of students that volunteer their time before and during Freshers' Week to help the team with the smooth-running of the events and also make sure that the incoming students are settled in. Captains are allocated a halls group that they spend the week with, getting to know them and helping them form communities. The types of things that Captains get up to throughout the week are:
- Encouraging students to get involved with Freshers' Week and The SU
- Signposting to relevant information on campus
- Supporting the Freshers' Week Event Managers with the events
- Helping to pass on relevant information to students in the run-up to Freshers' Week
- Championing inclusivity and ensuring everyone is adjusting to University life.
To be a Captain, you'll need to be available from Monday 19 September until Sunday 2 October. You'll receive full training in a range of areas including inclusivity, welfare and event management.
There also may be some small tasks over the summer period such as supporting writing a blog or supporting the Freshers' Week Team on social media.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, all you have to do is complete a short survey that outlines the reasons why you want to be a captain and the ways that you can make Freshers' Week a fun and inclusive week for everyone. The survey will open on Friday 1 April at 09:00 and a link will appear on this page.
