Supporting Supporters: Eating Difficulties Course will not be running this semester. This course will be back next academic year in Semester 1

We know supporting someone who has an eating disorder can be difficult. Sometimes you can be unsure on what to say, how to best be there and sometimes it can be hard to simply understand. Our free, two-week student-led peer support group 'Supporting Supporters: Eating Difficulties' aims to provide people with a better understanding of eating disorders and develop skills which may be useful when supporting someone.

This is the third year that this course has been run. It is led by our award winning facilitators who have won the Most Effective Peer Support Group award for two years running (2016, 2017).

When does the course run?

The course runs for 2 workshops, in semester 1 of 2020/21 University Year

What does the course involve?

The Supporting Supporters: Eating Difficulties course consists of 2 workshop sessions, informally working through a structured workbook in a supportive group environment. Both weeks will cover a different topic related to supporting someone who has an eating disorder, with a focus on developing understanding and skills so you can best support your friends/family.

Below is an outline of the topics covered in each group session:

  • Session 1: Understanding Eating Disorders and Communication
  • Session 2: The Recovery Cycle

Who runs the course?

Each course session will be informally run by two student volunteers, called ‘group facilitators’ who will work through the material with you. They are there to make sure that there is time to cover the workbook content, and to ensure that conversations remain supportive and non-judgmental.

All group facilitators have received training for their role, however it is important to stress that they are not trained counsellors or professionals and are not there to provide advice.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for you if you are currently a University of Bath student, are over 18 years old, and are interested in learning more about supporting someone with an eating difficulty. This course is not specifically designed for students who support others experiencing other mental difficulties. We have a separate course specifically designed for those supporting someone who self-harms called Supporting Supporters: Self-Harm.

This course is not suitable for you if you are currently experiencing an eating disorder as some of the content discussed may be triggering.

This course is not a substitute for professional training. Supporting people can be very hard work and incredibly serious. If you are facing further struggles, please seek professional support.

What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring is yourself! In session 1, we will provide you with workbooks which you are welcome to take away with you at the end of the session.

I don’t want others to know I attend these sessions or which of my friends has an eating difficulty…

Don’t worry! All of our group facilitators have agreed to a strict confidentiality policy. This means that we will not discuss attendees outside of the sessions and we will not reveal any details of what is discussed to anyone without your consent (including staff members). Anything that is talked about in the sessions will not be shared and you are free to be as open as you feel comfortable with.
