If you’re reading this, you’ve made it halfway through the first semester... Well done!
I must admit, I’m half congratulating myself as well, the past couple of weeks have been very busy! I mentioned to you guys the committee of the office of the vice-chancellor and that I had a meeting coming up. I did have a meeting of this committee last week and have another one coming up next week. This one is quite exciting, because it is the chancellor – HRH Prince Edward – who chairs it, which means I get to meet him in person (which I had briefly done during graduation ceremonies). I also went with the media group committees and the other officers to media law training, which admittedly sounds dry but was actually quite interesting (blame my politics student brain for that). Amber and I also went (remotely, since Freshers’ flu got the best of us) to a council away day where we learned a lot about university strategy for the upcoming years. As you can imagine, this is very helpful for us as SU officers. It gives us the chance to revisit our SU strategy in relation to the university’s.
I went to advancement board – which is another university committee. This one looks at how we engage with alumni. I think it is very interesting and definitely somewhere we could be doing more in as an SU. We have so many very accomplished alumni that started as we did, being society and committee members, that it’s crazy that we don’t make more of an effort to engage with them. That said, our associate members deserve a shoutout for they make our biggest events of the year (especially Freshers’ Week arena nights and largest events). We also had a meeting with UCU (University and College Union), which is useful – to make sure we are aware of any things they have coming up.
We had rugby at the rec!!! If you were there, you must know how little it mattered that it was raining during the whole game, for the vibes were immaculate. I must admit, having to go to pub golf and then SCORE after it was a massive accomplishment – as making it to work the next morning was. On the subject of SCORE, let me just say that I’m trying to break women’s football’s record of the person with the most pictures in SCORE, so look out for me in the pictures. Last week I made it to 5 or 6, which I think it’s a very decent amount. Finally, Hanna and I went to the 9to5 musical. I cannot explain how much we enjoyed it. It just proved how talented and passionate our students are. I will definitely become a usual at these events. I’ve also been attending socials for volleyball (though I can’t play that sport at all), Latin American society socials, and salsa sessions. Highly recommend all these societies and their events. I hope I get to go to events for more societies that I haven’t tried out yet. I’ll make sure to tell you all about it in the next update. Come back for that in a couple of weeks, as usual.
Stay warm and be kind to each other!
Much love,
Jiji x
