Developing Virtual Exchange approaches for Internationalisation at the University of Bath

This year, the University of Bath has been participating in a Fulbright Global Challenges Teaching Award. Dr Pete Manning in the Dept. of Social & Policy Sciences and partners in Elon University (USA) have been developing a Virtual Exchange/Collaborative Online International Learning (VE/COIL) to run in an undergraduate unit in Semester one, 2026-27.

This innovative teaching approach remains underutilized at the University of Bath. The aim of this project is to develop a suite of resources, guides, and training that will enable colleagues in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (and across the University in the longer term) to embed and deploy VE/COIL approaches in their teaching.

This project will focus on two areas of activity:

  1. Working with the core team from the Faculty and Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), a PGR student will collate and translate the learning from the Fulbright award into written guides and resources for UoB colleagues.
  2. The team will conduct a set of three training and support workshops through February-May 2025 recruiting targeted teaching leaders across the Faculty for pilot activities, to enable a second wave of VE/COIL implemented in Semester two 2026-27 and/or Semester one 2027-28.

The postholder will work with the experienced academic and professional services colleagues in the core team to:

January-April 2026: Developing Resources

The RA will develop a suite of resources and guides that will (a) underpin pilot activities and (b) be made available through the CLT Hub. These will include specific guidance on:

  • Principles of VE/COIL
  • Learning Technologies for VE/COIL
  • Guidance on assessment design (including guidance on planning/approvals)

In addition, the RA will help with the planning/delivery of the introductory talks and training workshops to be held from February/March 2026.

We particularly welcome applications from PGR students with experience of online teaching, and an interest in curriculum and assessment design and planning. The role would be particularly suitable for candidates working toward Associate Fellow or Fellow of the HEA.
