Summary

Are you the sort of person who people come to for a bit of feedback or advice? Are you due to graduate in 2028 or later? The Careers Centre is looking for Student Employability Coaches, to provide peer support to your fellow students on CVs and applications.

Careers is recruiting for Student Employability Coaches and Vacancy Processing Administrators. You can apply for only one of these roles.

Main Purpose

Student Employability Coaches (SECs) form a key part of the Careers Team. They provide one-to-one application and CV feedback to students coming into the Careers Centre. The Careers Centre operates on a drop-in basis. SECs will manage their own drop-in queue giving around 10-15 minutes of feedback to each student. They may also offer bookable callback appointments to students and graduates away from Bath via Microsoft Teams.

SECs may also staff our front desk in the Careers Centre, showing resources, adding students to drop-in queues or booking appointments. You might also be involved in staffing our Careers Fairs or other events.

As part of the role, you will gain Administrator access to our MyFuture system and be trained to add and manage your own drop-in/appointment schedule. You will also book students into other appointments.

In quieter times, there will be opportunities to work on other career-related projects. For example, content and resource creation or creating a workshop session.

Full training and support will be given. You will have a dedicated line manager and regular meetings with other SECs to discuss best practice and share your experiences.

Hours and pay

You will be appointed as an hourly paid worker, on a rate of CW2, a minimum of £14.12 (this is £12.60 per hour plus holiday pay). See the University website for up-to-date pay rates.

SECs work up to four hours per week during teaching/semester time. Exact shifts will be organised based on your timetable and availability, but you will be expected to work all your shifts during teaching time. Time-off requests during teaching time will be considered on a case-by-case basis but will not generally be permitted in October. Hours are not guaranteed during vacation and revision/assessment periods. See the 2026/27 academic year chart for a breakdown of semester weeks.

The job is campus-based and in person when the Careers Centre is open. Current opening hours are 10:00 to 16:00.

Eligibility and essential dates

To be eligible you must be a current student, graduating no earlier than May 2028 and not on placement during the academic year 2026-2027. You will need to be available for a half-day in-person training session before the end of semester 2 2026 and available to start the role between April and September 2026 (exact start is flexible).

You will also need to be available for the following training dates and start date.

Unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions if you are not available for the training.

We may be able to offer an alternative interview date.

  • Interview – week commencing 16 March
  • Online training – Monday 7 September 10:00 – 16:00
  • In-person half day of training on campus on one of the following dates (exact timing to be confirmed):
    • Monday 21 September
    • Tuesday 22 September
  • Shadowing Careers staff for training 2-hour slot during week commencing 21 September
  • Regular shifts will start from the week commencing Monday 28 September

Current SECs experiences

“I really enjoy my time working as an SEC. It has given me valuable experience and a variety of insights into various careers. This role has helped me build confidence and interpersonal skills and allowed me to work with a great team of fellow SECs and Career’s staff.

Meetings with other SECs and my line manager has allowed me to develop within my role and build experience. Not having much experience when beginning as an SEC, this role gave me the opportunity to build some solid experience and give me direction into my future career.

Being able to work around my timetable is great, being an SEC allows me to work during my studies without it getting in the way.”

“During my time as a SEC, I have developed my interpersonal communication skills and deepened my understanding of job applications. This has not only allowed me to support others in their application journey but has also given me greater confidence in pursuing my own. With a friendly careers team around, there are always opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive environment.”
