Two students looking over work

The SU Voice Team has published a new research report advocating for greater student involvement in the planning and development of university events, activities, and spaces.

The Student-Led Programming Report draws on a wide range of academic literature to demonstrate that student-led initiatives, when supported by professional staff, are more effective, sustainable, and impactful than those designed solely by university staff. The report explores how student involvement enhances engagement, fosters belonging, and improves outcomes across diverse student communities.

Why It Matters

The research shows that students thrive when they are given meaningful roles in shaping their university experience. From designing social spaces to leading cultural programming, student-led approaches create more authentic, inclusive, and responsive environments. The report also highlights how these models can help overcome barriers faced by international and underrepresented students, improving access and wellbeing.

What Happens Next?

The report will feed into the Postgraduate Taught (PGT) Review, helping shape future improvements to the PGT experience. It also provides a valuable resource for university departments looking to embed student voice into their activities at all levels of study.

The SU Voice Team hopes this research will encourage more collaborative approaches across campus, where students help shape the direction of initiatives, while staff provide the support and resources needed to bring them to life.
