A celebration of the dedication, commitment and talent of our student groups.
On Thursday 24 April, we held the Annual SU Awards at Komedia in Bath, a celebration of the dedication, talent, and commitment shown by The SU’s incredible student groups. This year, we received over 600 nominations from a wide variety of groups, reflecting what has been a truly outstanding year.
The ceremony was hosted by alumnus Jordan Edwards, with awards presented by the SU Officers, our Chief Executive, and the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phil Taylor.
The audience enjoyed two fantastic performances from BURBAN and the Bath Indian Dance Society, both of whom truly brought the event to life, it was wonderful to see the room completely captivated.
One of the evening highlights was the presentation of the Rob Tyrrell Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution. This award is in honour of Rob Tyrrell, the Activities Officer for 2020/2021, whom we sadly lost in 2020. The award recognises those students who have gone beyond the call of duty throughout their University career, thrown themselves into SU activities and are likely to have been involved in multiple areas and made lasting impressions.
Due to the strength of this year's nominations, we also presented a Highly Commended Award. George Cooper received this honour for his ongoing commitment to Media throughout his time at Bath, as well as his contribution to the Bars and Events team and the support for many SU central led events. The top prize went to Elena Chamberlain, Elena has been integral to the student community for these past 4 years. She has been heavily involved with theatre, poetry and dance, as well as directing and writing various plays. They have performed at TEDx and led on a project as part of their Arts Scholarship for spoken word and have covered a significant amount throughout their university career, going above and beyond to help and support other members of their community. This award comes with a cash prize of £100, kindly donated by Rob’s family and the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
As the evening progressed, excitement built toward the announcement of the Best Overall Group Award. With so many deserving groups, competition was fierce, but in the end, Bath Jets Cheerleading took home the prize. Bath Jets Cheerleading Club stands out for its strong sense of community and high levels of engagement. They have hosted a range of activities, including competitions, social events and showcases, which has resulted in over 200 members competing across 8 teams. Bath Jets have already made club history this year by being crowned Lyrical National Champions and continue to foster a sense of belonging through a collaborative and supportive environment. The room came alive as the results were announced and the cheers could be heard from afar! Huge congratulations to Bath Jets.
