Our Students’ Union (SU) Safeguarding Policy is designed to protect children and adults at risk of harm on our premises or when involved in SU activities. We have designated procedures in place for safeguarding activities for members of student groups who are under 18 years of age, further details of which can be found below.
Duty of Care and Safeguarding Policy:
The SU Duty of Care and Safeguarding Policy addresses all key aspects of our Duty of Care and Safeguarding processes and procedures. Please refer to the Policy for further information on the roles and responsibilities of our SU representatives in managing Duty of Care and Safeguarding issues.
The Policy also explains our procedures for safeguarding activities for student members of SU Groups who are under 18. Certain high-risk activities require the consent of a guardian to allow students who are under 18 to participate and there are also some activities that are not permitted for students who are under 18. A full list of these activities and links to the Under 18s Parent/Guardian Consent Form are included in the Policy, alongside the Procedure for Safeguarding Activities for Under 18 Members of SU Groups.

SU Safeguarding and Duty of Care Report:
The SU Safeguarding and Duty of Care Report is designed to ensure that SU Representatives and students can disclose concerns about someone who may be at risk of harm where escalation under the SU Duty of Care and Safeguarding Policy may be required. Even if you are unsure whether your concern is strictly related to a Duty of Care or Safeguarding concern, it is best to seek appropriate support by submitting a Report so that this can be reviewed by our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs). Once you have submitted a Report, our trained DSLs will then review this and decide on next steps in line with our SU Duty of Care and Safeguarding Policy.
If you are in doubt about whether something is a safeguarding issue, it is still important that you feel able to raise a concern. Please do not hesitate to complete the following form so that the Designated safeguarding Leads can take appropriate action to address the issue. If someone is in immediate danger, you should first contact the emergency services (dial 999) and then notify the DSL as soon as it is safe to do so. You can use the Safezone App to alert security.
All safeguarding concerns involving children or adults at risk must be reported immediately to the SU’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or University DSL in their absence.
No student involved in SU activities should ever hesitate to report a safeguarding issue for fear of “getting it wrong, breaching confidentiality, or overreacting.
