Welcome to The Plug & Tub

Right in the heart of campus, just off the main Parade, you’ll find The Plug & The Tub, The SU's very own bar and nightclub. Whether you're after chilled drinks with mates at The Plug, or ready to dance the night away in The Tub, we’ve got you covered. These two iconic venues can open separately or combine into one massive space – making it the biggest nightclub in Bath!

Every drink you buy and every night you enjoy helps power the SU – from student groups and societies to support services and representation. That means every penny you spend goes straight back into making student life even better.

We’re also proud to be a Gold Best Bar None winner – a national award from the NUS that recognises our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and unforgettable environment for every student.

Sustainability

We, The SU, are committed to the fight against the climate crisis. As an organisation we are looking at everything we do and how we can make changes to reduce our own carbon emissions.

Reducing our Impact

Here’s what we have already done to reduce our impact:
  • Reduced plastic waste - We have swapped the disposable plastic cups for reusable ones to use during our club nights. This saves a staggering 7,000 plastic cups a week!
  • Eco-friendly takeaways - Food from the Plug is served in Vegware boxes. These are made from plant-based materials using renewable and lower carbon energy. At the moment these can be disposed of in general waste but we are working on ways to compost them, which is what they are designed for.
  • No more disposable coffee cups - All hot drinks are served in your own cup or a reusable Starbucks cup you can purchase for £1.
  • Refill your water bottle - You can refill your bottle from the water jug at the end of the bar in the Plug, or ask a member of staff to fill it for you.

Help us to recycle your waste

Here’s a handy guide to using the recycling bins in the Plug & Tub.
  • Food waste - Green bin - For all leftover food. But first, think whether you can save it for later instead of disposing of it.
  • Plastic and cans - Red bin - Plastic bottles, drinks cans. Don’t throw away your reusable Starbucks cup. Save it for next time.
  • General waste – Grey bin - Vegware packaging and anything else can go into this bin which goes to landfill. Make sure you check if your items can be recycled before using this bin.
  • Cardboard - Take any cardboard including pizza boxes to the bar. Our staff will put it in the cardboard recycling for you.

The road to a sustainable future

There’s still lots more to be done. Here are the changes we are working towards:

Reducing emissions through our menu

Everything we eat has an impact on the environment and some foods have a greater impact than others. That’s why we are working to give you more foods with lower carbon emissions including more vegetarian and vegan options.

Improved dietary requirements

By improving our vegan options, we will offer more dairy-free options. We are also working on how to provide gluten-free alternatives in a safe way from our kitchen.

Improved Bins

We are working with the University to provided cardboard bins to dispose of pizza boxes. We are also working towards effective composting of the Vegware takeaway packaging. Vegware lets off less harmful toxins than regular waste when put in landfill, but when composted can help to nourish British soil, support healthy plant growth and reduce the risk of flooding.

No more paper tickets

We are currently working with our ticket provider for club nights such as Score to implement ticketless entry to our events and club nights. This will reduce the amount of paper printing we do each year. You may see some ticketless events this year as we try out our new systems.

Cold drink cups

We are working to find a replacement for the Starbucks Cold Drink cups for the iced coffees which are particularly popular in the summer.

1-Drop Campus

We are joining up our food and drink suppliers, where possible, to ensure deliveries make one trip to campus for all outlets. This will reduce the emissions of our suppliers who might have to make repeat or additional trips.

Safety

Drink Spiking

Event Control

The venue has an event control room which looks over the night club when operating, with 19 CCTV cameras.

Spikeys

At both the Plug & Tub you can ask for ‘Spikeys’ free of charge. Spikeys are an anti-spiking product which fits tightly in bottles, blocking the entrance from being open to having additional substances added! Just ask any staff member when ordering your drink.

StopTopps

We also now have StopTopps, these are versatile drink protectors. They are single-use foils that can be put over a drink, and are suitable for any drinking vessel, including cans, bottles, and glasses. Made from small sheets of aluminium foil, through which you can insert a straw for easy drinking. This makes it difficult for anything to be added to your drink without your knowledge.

Security Staff

All bar and security staff are trained on drink spiking awareness as well as on the use of our SU Safe Taxi Scheme, which gives you a safe transport option home when needed.

Searching

Security have increased frequency of on-the-door searching and additional training will be incorporated into the nightly bar briefing for all staff.

Safe Area

The Student Centre has a safe area for students to use if they feel unwell and need to rest during a night out. Please contact the nearest member of staff if you feel unwell for directions.

What to do if you think you have been spiked in our venue

  • Immediately ask for help from a friend that you trust or the nearest available member of staff for assistance.
  • If you are able to, keep possession of your most recent drink. This could be useful evidence to test if the drink has been spiked.

What to do if you wake up thinking you have been spiked the night before

Everybody reacts differently to any situation. You shouldn’t feel under any pressure to respond in a particular way. If you want to, you could:

  • Report the incident via our Report and Support tool. This can be done anonymously if you prefer.
  • Discuss the incident and options with a Wellbeing Adviser or a University Counsellor (all fully trained and will maintain your confidentiality unless there is a threat to health or safety). Contact the Student Services helpdesk on 01225 383838
  • Report the incident to University Security call 01225 383999, or directly to the Police.
  • Contact SU Advice and Support at suadvice@bath.ac.uk

How can I try to prevent my drink from being spiked?

You should:

  • not leave your drink unattended and keep an eye on friends' drinks
  • ask for a ‘Spikey’ or ‘Stop Topp’ when ordering your drink from the bar
  • keep your drink in your hand at all times
  • never accept a drink from someone who you do not know or trust
  • not share, swap or drink any left over drinks
