Update, and Leap Day

I’m writing this post on my way back from the Bristol Climate Youth Strike (god the weather was horrible), in what it feels like the first time I can relax for a hot second in a while.

Folks, what an incredible time this has been! You have really come back from break and absolutely smashed it, haven’t you?

I am quite unsure as to where the hell February has gone. It feels like yesterday that I was hanging up the pride flag in the SU, and LGBT+ History Month is already drawing to a close. And what a History Month has it been!! Don’t miss the last event being held tonight, a cute lil open mic in the Edge, from 6.30. I want to say congratulations to the LGBT+ group for taking a leap of faith and organising the first ever drag show at Bath University, raising a whopping £769 for Off the Record Bath.

A couple of days ago saw the first heat of the MusicSoc battle of the bands happen, and wow, it was a show and a half. Masterfully organised and executed, I cannot wait for the second heat in a couple of weeks’ time!

Yesterday was also the opening of BUST’s ‘All my Sons’ in the Mission Theatre. There is one performance today and one tomorrow - this lot has been working super hard to serve you an absolutely spectacular show, one you really don’t wanna miss.

In terms of the work within the area, earlier this month we passed the societies reform package, ensuring a better time for committees in the future - all reforms were voted in and I am so proud to have done this together. The next things we will be tackling is budgets, committee elections, and the position of Faith & Cultural groups.

In terms of environmental work, the Climate Action Framework has been divided in its work streams and the work streams have met individually - the University Carbon Emission Reduction talked about bold, ambitious targets, we had felt that carbon neutrality and divestment would be a dream, it’s a real possibility now. I have met with members of the University Executive Board to talk about our University code of Ethics and how it badly needs updating as it does not mention the climate crisis at all. We further expressed the importance of making sustainability a core part of the university upcoming strategy, as we fear it is slipping away as a priority. Check out my page on the website www.thesubath.com/suofficers/activities for a full breakdown of what I have done and what's going on at the moment since I took post in July!

This would be the end of the month in most cases, but this year we get a LEAP DAY. We get a full extra day this month, how exciting is that? Whether you’re stressed about coursework, extra-curricular commitments, even if you’re not stressed at all, take the chance that leap day offers you and relax. Go see a movie, get a coffee with a friend, be kind to each other, ask that person out, go for a walk, get out of Bath for the day, if you can. Treasure this leap day! Thank me later.

Can’t wait to see what comes next.

Stay fab,

Franci
