The one with the Olympic Athletes

Hello everyone, and welcome to the beginning of September update!

September means two things: time to accept it’s about to get cold again (I know, sorry to remind you) and FRESHERS WEEK! In the build-up to what’s probably the craziest time of year around the SU, a lot has been going on.

Since the last time we had a chat, I’ve been working alongside the rest of the officers and the SU staff to get the new academic year ready for you. Part of it has been Hanna and I working with Campus Services to understand previous years’ feedback on first year accommodation, as we want to make sure your experience in halls is the best it can be. For you fellow international students out there, we also want to make sure you feel like you are part of a community. If you’re interested in being part of the team that makes this happen for the halls of residence, consider running for hall committees!

We also went to a Southwest sabbatical officers’ meet up at UWE in Bristol. It was very interesting, since it’s always helpful to hear what other SUs are up to and share some campaign ideas – especially since we’re in the same region and are all facing similar issues in the community side of things. I think you can expect some interesting campaigns to come from this – more on this as it comes. As you might’ve guessed, housing and transport are likely to be somewhere in there.

On the community side of things as well, we had our introduction with the Student Community Partnership (SCP) recently. This group is essential in creating a space where students can engage with the community in a way that reduces the gap in understanding and agreements that have historically been problematic. Because of this, it is a great resource to have and know more about. If you live around Oldfield, you’re probably going to see them towards the beginning of the academic year. Make sure to introduce yourself and ask more about what the SCP does!

And now let’s talk about the more fun things...

I mentioned Freshers Week in passing, and I’m sure that’s the one thing you want to know more about. The arena night themes are up on our Instagram, so make sure to check it out. We’ve been helping the FW Event Managers (FWEMs for short) with some bits and bops, like finding the best possible DJs for each of the nights. I’ve also been involved in filming some content for social media, for FW23 and for other activities that are coming up this year. You can find it all on the SU Bath Instagram!

This update has been about a lot of different things, but I wanted to leave you with a picture of David and I at the UIPM 2023 Pentathlon World Championships this weekend. We were invited to rep the SU and have some drinks while enjoying all the different events. It was probably the highlight of my fortnight! We even got to meet a Bath alum who competed in the championship a few years back.

Next time we catch up, it’ll be the week before Freshers! I hope you’re all as excited as we are to kick-off this new academic year. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything or want to find out more about how to prepare for your time in Bath.

Much love,
