We are a supportive family seeking a bright, personable and encouraging university student to provide academic tutoring and mentoring to a 13-year-old Year 8 pupil in Bradford-on-Avon.
He is a bright, funny and genuinely engaging young person who has become increasingly disengaged from school following the death of his father two years ago. He has fallen behind academically and has sometimes found the classroom environment challenging.
We are keen to support him now, while he is still in Year 8, to help him rebuild his Key Stage 3 foundations, academic confidence and study habits before he reaches the GCSE options stage.
Importantly, he has himself recognised that having a tutor could help him and is keen to invest in improving his future options. He would prefer an online learning environment, although over time he would be open to meeting up occasionally.
What The Role Is All About...
The successful candidate will provide approximately 5–6 hours of support each week, combining:
- KS3 academic catch-up and subject support
- Homework and study support
- Study skills and organisation
- Preparation for GCSE subject choices
- Encouragement, confidence-building and positive mentoring
We are looking for someone who can combine academic ability with warmth, patience and the ability to build rapport with a teenager.
This is not simply a homework-supervision role. We are looking for someone who can become a positive academic role model — someone who enjoys their subject, is enthusiastic about learning and can help a young person reconnect with his own potential.
Are You Our Ideal Candidate?
This opportunity would particularly suit a student studying:
- Education or teacher training
- A subject relevant to the secondary curriculum
- A degree with strong GCSE-level subject expertise - preferably with a focus on a combination of Science, History, English and Maths.
Students interested in a future career in secondary teaching would be especially welcome.
Previous tutoring, mentoring, youth work or classroom experience is desirable, but personality and the ability to connect with a young person are equally important.
Online Or In Person
The role can be undertaken entirely online, so applicants do not need to live locally to Bradford-on-Avon.
In-person tutoring in Bradford-on-Avon is also possible if preferred and mutually convenient.

Interview Process

The selection process will involve:
- Initial video conversation - approximately 15 minutes. A short informal video call with a family member to introduce ourselves, discuss the role and explore whether there is a good mutual fit.
- Second-stage conversation - approximately 30 minutes. Shortlisted candidates will have a further conversation with the student and his mother. This gives everyone an opportunity to meet, ask questions and establish whether the relationship feels right for everyone involved.
- Hiring Decision. Following the second conversation, we will make a decision and agree next steps with the successful candidate. Appropriate safeguarding arrangements will be discussed and agreed before tutoring begins.
