Want to help students have a stronger voice and make change happen?

We’re looking for a Liberation Community Organiser to work alongside students and elected Officers to understand the issues affecting liberation communities, bring people together, and support them to take action.

This is a people-focused role. You’ll spend time getting to know students, listening to their experiences, building relationships, and helping turn the issues they raise into campaigns, evidence and change. You’ll also work with Officers to make sure student voices are heard by the University and other decision-makers.

You don’t need to have worked in community organising before. Student leadership, volunteering, campaigning, society involvement, part-time work and other experiences can all give you relevant skills for this role. What matters most is that you care about equality, are good at building relationships, and want to support students to make change.

What you’ll do

Listen and understand

• Build relationships with students through one-to-one conversations.
• Spend time getting to know liberation communities and understanding the issues that matter to them.
• Identify wider issues by listening to students' experiences.
• Turn what you hear into useful evidence, briefings and insight that can support campaigns and decision-making.

Speak up and support change

• Represent student voices in University committees, consultations and equality, diversity and inclusion spaces.
• Work with elected Officers to raise issues with decision-makers and push for change.
• Support Officers to develop and lead campaigns on issues affecting liberation communities.
• Help students find the right support when they raise welfare, housing or academic concerns.

Help students lead

• Bring students together around issues they have in common.
• Support students to develop campaigns based on their experiences.
• Help students build confidence, develop skills and take on leadership opportunities.
• Connect students across societies, courses and communities so they can work together.
• Build relationships with students who may not currently engage with traditional Students’ Union structures.

You don't need to have done all of this before. We’re interested in what you can bring from any part of your experience.

We’re looking for someone who:

• Cares about equality, liberation and challenging discrimination.
• Can build positive and trusting relationships with different people.
• Is a good listener and is comfortable having conversations with people about their experiences.
• Can speak up and represent others with confidence.
• Is organised and can turn conversations and ideas into practical action.
• Can communicate clearly and work effectively with others.

Experience of student campaigns, societies, volunteering, community groups or leadership is useful, but we welcome applications from people who are developing these skills through their studies and other experiences.

What this role isn't

This isn't a casework or advice role. You won't be expected to solve students' individual problems. Instead, you'll listen, signpost students to the right support, identify wider issues and work with students and Officers to push for change.

It also isn't a passive role. You'll be out building relationships, bringing people together, advocating for change and supporting students to lead.

Where and when?

Location: Primarily based in 1 East, Claverton Down campus, with work taking place across campus where appropriate. There may be opportunities to work from home for specific tasks, by agreement with your line manager.
