Fight Night 2 was held at Loughborough University on December 4th 2009, with 13 semi-contact fights and 2 full contact fights featuring 7 women and 8 men on each side.
Fresh off the coach, Bath University raced into the lead as Sarah Goring, Anthony Shum and Chair Rachel Spry won their bouts before Loughborough finally troubled the scorers, Leigh Schvartz bringing some respectability into a 3-1 score line to dampen the increasingly mocking Bath supporters. Early Bath domination continued with Amy Bradburn and John Buckton winning their fights, the latter having had less than 24 hours notice of his fight, receiving the call whilst out partying the evening before.
With Bath now 5-1 up in the first to 9 points contest, they could be forgiven for a little complacency, and when the next four fights were split evenly to put them 7-3 up, the champagne was being brought out and almost uncorked when Anna Ross put them just one point away from glory with four fights to go. What happened next is remembered only in times of deep despair...
The final two semi-contact fights were both taken by Loughborough, taking us through to the Full-contact showpiece fights with Loughborough needing to win both to retain the crown they had won a year previously. When Mario Yiasoumi edged out Tom McGee in the first full contact bout, the atmosphere was tense: the whole evening had come down to the final fight for the second year in succession, but both sides were confident of victory with their best fighters saved till last.
The final full contact fight was a brutal affair in which Loughborough fighter Paul Field emerged triumphant, securing a second win for his University and retaining the Trophy they had won a year previously. Once more, Bath had lost at the last fight, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and only the knowledge of a rematch the next semester cheered them on the long coach home.
