CS risk assessment updates

Main updates after Freshers Trip: group management e.g. health concerns and group leader delegation. Risk assessment can be found on google drive and club website.

Committee to read sections that are relevant to them

JTK and JB- update on Safety Seminar key points

JB:as a club, BUMC is doing a really good job compared with other universities. Can improve on awareness of medical issues as need to know how to act if someone gets into difficulty. Example: before activity give group chance to make group leader aware of health problem and how to solve it e.g. where inhaler is located.

Regarding group planning, leaders must decide beforehand how struggling members of the group will be split up on walk and when. Reinforce what activity entails beforehand so people know what they are signing up for.

Text 999 Service- way of contacting Emergency Services via SMS. Need to register handset beforehand. Good thing for committee to have as in a position of responsibility.

JTK attended gear talk: can improve on getting into habit of checking gear before use not just at the crag. Teach people how to check gear.

Group Leaders to implement medical awareness measures and group planning measures

All committee to register with Text 999

All committee to check gear before use and teach other members how to check gear

JTK to chase up James McHaffie for Powerpoints from safety seminar

CS- Club membership update- how to manage numbers

Already at 195 members! Due to this need to offer more activities that all members can do. Not feasible to offer more trips. Need to offer activities that are local and can be accessed by public transport so not restricted to MPV numbers

All committee to think about possible activities, discuss next meeting

DW to contact University of Bristol Mountaineering Club to get ideas on how to manage numbers

21

RH- sign ups and reserve lists and how to avoid confusion

Problem encountered that when everyone clicks sign up there isn’t time for page to refresh to say trip is full. From now on there will be a separate sign up for reserves to avoid confusion.

All trip organisers to make separate sign ups for reserves

22

CS- Club development plan

CS to have meeting with Matt Price (club development officer for SU)

After committee discussion, we have decided main areas to focus on:

Structure and future committee- current committee to start to get other members to lead e.g. on Sunday Walks

Improve BUCS League position- possibility of competitions against other unis. Links in with development squad.

Sponsorship- possibility of getting sponsorship with new climbing wall in Bath when it opens next year. BUMC stash would look more professional with sponsors; we aren’t very sponsored compared with other clubs.

Raise money for charity- lots of members can get involved. Great Western Air Ambulance our preferred charity.

Other areas of focus to include:

Funding Applications- doing already

Development Squad/Sessions

Organise comps against other unis

CS to report back on meeting with Matt Price at next meeting.

23

CS- Alumni Fund Proposals

CS applying for fund to get a third trad rack for the club. Applications for Alumni Fund close 8th November (form found in same place as First Aid subsidy form).

Committee to discuss with CS and complete any applications by 8th Nov

 Update on expenses

RC reminder regarding eXpense 365 app for reclaiming trip expenses. Gross amount including VAT should always be reclaimed unless for a social or stash. Using the appropriate ‘SA’ code instead of ‘SG’ will ensure expenses can be approved quickly.
