The Dance of the leaves
The path ahead opened into a sanctuary of ancient beeches, their branches braiding overhead into a ceiling of gold and copper, obscuring the winking stars from sight. These trees stood perfectly still, as though frozen in time or lulled into a deep slumber following the excitement of summer. The crisp autumn air held its breath, as if centuries of memories lay trapped beneath a heavy layer of earth and leaves. Almost reluctantly, afraid to break the beautiful spell, the girl stepped onto the wet cobblestone. Her leather sole met the ground with a soft, resonant strike, the sound rippling forward like a heartbeat through the sleeping avenue.
Instantly, the stillness dissolved into a deep, welcoming sigh.
High in the canopy, a gentle rattle stirred a tree, sending a soft, papery shiver from one crown to the next. The massive trunks groaned with a deep, melodic vibration, leaning slow and deliberate toward the center of the path. They bowed their heavy limbs in unison, a row of ancient, earthly guardians lowering their gaze to greet her as she passed beneath them.
The wind met her then, rising from the roots like a warm, living breath. It coiled tenderly around her neck and brushed her cheek, trailing invisible, affectionate fingers through her hair. A gentle pressure nudged the small of her back, a soft weight guiding her deeper into the embrace of the woods. The low, rhythmic thrumming of the branches vibrated through her chest, shaping the rustle of the delicate branches into soft, whispered syllables of her own name.
A single gold leaf severed from the high branches, drifting lazily through the gloom to rest against her boot like an old friend returning home. Millions more followed in a breathtaking cascade, a magnificent deluge of crimson, rust, and molten amber dancing through the air. The wind caught the falling fire, spinning the leaves into a swirling, luminous vortex that cradled her in its centre like moth drawn to a flame.
A breathless laugh tore from her throat, bright and free. Slipping her hands from her pockets, she flung her arms wide and surrendered to the centre of the storm, spinning blindly as the wind and the golden tide held her close. As the swirling current began to ease, the breeze gave a final, playful tug at the hem of her coat, wrapping the fabric snugly around her like a mother tucking a restless child into bed.
The Hidden Library
Behind a door that bore no name
The handle turned without a sound,
And in she stepped, as if she came
To somewhere lost and now was found.
The shelves climbed up into the gloom,
Their leather spines worn soft and brown,
While golden dust filled all the room
And drifted, slow as snow, back down.
The air smelled sweet of paper, rain,
Of vanilla, glue and ink long dried,
And every breath, a dusty lane
Of stories sleeping side by side.
A clock forgot the hour to chime,
A page turned over on its own;
She traced the spines, a long, slow line,
And each hummed worlds she’d never known.
A ladder leaned against the night,
A chair still held a shape, long fled,
A book lay open in the light,
Still warm, as if it had just been read.
She did not touch it. There she stayed,
As amber light fell soft and low,
And every book, unafraid,
Whispered stay, and she did not go.
