Hiya! We’re the Uni of Bath Vegetarian Society – though we’re better known as VegSoc.
Every Wednesday, the seven of us on the committee come together to cook up a free, fully vegan meal for our members. We’re not professional chefs – just a bunch of students who love food, love cooking, and love creating a space where people can connect over a shared meal.
We always challenge ourselves to try something new – from hearty curries and stews to the occasional dessert. We serve around 40 people each week, turning Wednesday evenings in Scala Hall into a lively, welcoming space where everyone fills up their Tupperware (usually multiple times!) and feels right at home.
In March, we were visited by the council for a food hygiene inspection, and we’re incredibly proud to say we received a 5 out of 5 hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency! It’s great to have all the care and effort we put in recognised – from safe food handling to keeping our cooking space clean and organised. Not bad for a bunch of students, right?
And that’s not all – we’re absolutely honoured to have won the SU’s Best Regular Activity award this year! It means the world to us to know our little Wednesday dinners have had such a positive impact.
Being part of VegSoc has meant so much to all of us. Here’s what a couple of our committee members had to say:
Elizabeth:
“I've really enjoyed being part of the VegSoc Committee as it’s given me the opportunity to work with a lovely team to prepare meals I wouldn’t usually try on my own. It’s been rewarding to provide affordable, homemade food while building a welcoming and inclusive community of students. I particularly enjoyed the Christmas meal, where we cooked a three-course meal at a fraction of the cost of eating out. We even decorated Scala ourselves, which made the event feel really special.”
Penn:
“At VegSoc I've met new people and made new friends, and I'm really proud of the community we've built. The diversity of my personal cooking has benefited from the weekly meal prep, which I really enjoy – it can be quite a relaxing experience on occasions, but even when it isn't, it's always worth it.”
Fancy joining us?
Membership is just £3.70 for the whole academic year, and it gets you access to all our weekly meals. Our dinners take place every Wednesday at 19:00 in Scala Hall. We’ve got space for around 40 people each week, so we run a first-come, first-served signup – usually going live on Mondays. While meals have finished for this year, we’d love to see some new faces next year!
