Nightline wins Bathnes Community Award

Johanna Spath

Nightline wins Young Volunteer Team of the Year in local awards.

The SU’s student support service, Nightline, has been announced as the winner in the Young Volunteer Team of the Year category as part of Bath’s Community Awards 2022! These awards recognise the positive contributions that the community make towards the local area, and awards are given in a total of seven categories. This year saw a total of 56 nominations, with 5 submitted within the Young Volunteer Team of the Year category.

Nightline won its award due to the committee working hard to be fully inclusive in offering a hybrid support service after the Covid years. Last academic year, Nightline changed back to doing more in-person shifts, after working remotely for the previous 18 months. Bath was the only Nightline in the country to run a hybrid service, meaning while they try to do most shifts in person so they can take calls, Nightline also gives volunteers the flexibility of running shifts remotely if they need to. This helped Nightline to stay open with volunteers unable to return to Bath at the beginning of the academic year and completing exam seasons from home. The protocol and policy were developed by the committee through good teamwork and discussion of how they could best support volunteers, resulting in their service being available every night (between 8 pm – 8 am) during term time.

Blake, the SU Community Officer, said ‘I am thrilled to hear that Nightline has been named the winner of the Young Volunteer Team, recognised by the Bath council as part of their annual Community Awards.  This is so well deserved as the group offer a vital service towards supporting students with issues, no matter how big or small, and is an award that is recognised by the wider community of Bath for the amount of effort and training put in by the volunteers. Thank you, Nightline!’

The Council will commemorate the winners by planting blossom trees in Henrietta Park in Bath on 22 November.

Congratulations to Nightline from everyone at The SU!
