On Thursday 1 May, we held the Annual SU Awards at The Pavilion in Bath, celebrating the dedication, talent, and commitment of the SU’s incredible student groups and individuals. This year, we received over 400 nominations from a wide range of groups, a true reflection of what has been an outstanding year.
The ceremony was hosted by alumnus Jordan Edwards, with awards presented by the SU Officers, our Chief Executive, and the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phil Taylor. In total, 12 awards were presented, with this year seeing one of the most diverse mixes of nominations yet, including many new groups putting themselves forward. We were lucky to have two fantastic performances from Salsa Society and BURBAN Society, which brough so much energy to the room.
One of the highlights of the night was the presentation of the Rob Tyrrell Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution. This award is given in honour of Rob Tyrrell, the Activities Officer for 2020/21, who we sadly lost in 2020. It recognises students who have gone above and beyond throughout their university journey, making a lasting impact across multiple areas of SU life.
This year’s winner was Fayyaz Ahmed. Fayyaz has thrown himself wholeheartedly into every role he’s taken on within The SU, from independently fundraising to supporting and leading large teams of students to do the same. An outstanding student staff member, he has gained experience across many areas of The SU and is known for his passion, generosity, and willingness to help others. He will be deeply missed when he graduates. On the night, it was clear just how respected and valued he is, as the room erupted when his name was announced.
The final award of the evening, ‘Best Overall Group’, was awarded to the University of Bath Rugby Union Club. The club has had an exceptional year both on and off the pitch, supporting over 400 members across men’s and women’s rugby. Alongside historic league wins, multiple cup finals, and record participation, the club raised over £30,000 for Movember and expanded playing opportunities through new teams and internal leagues, all while reinforcing a strong “one club” culture.
This event gives us a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect on just how much being part of a community means to our students. Seeing the celebrations, and even those simply enjoying being part of the moment, is truly something unique and special.
Huge congratulations to all our nominees and winners and thanks to everyone involved in making this such a memorable evening!
