The days are getting longer, the sun is out more often, and exams are coming to an end. It may seem appealing to swim in open water, and you may have heard that Warleigh Weir is the spot to go.
Swimming at Warleigh Weir, as at any weir, is generally considered highly dangerous due to strong undercurrents near the weir structure, even if the surface looks calm. It is not a designated swimming spot, and there are no lifeguards or assumption of safety. Raw sewage is released upstream, and the Island Field used to access the Weir is working agricultural land, which presents its own risks. Bacteria for diseases such as Weil’s Disease, which can cause kidney failure has been found in the water.
If you are intending on visiting, please respect the neighbours and landowners. Be conscious of any amplified music and excessive noise and pick up any litter before you leave. There are also no toilets avaiable on site. Similiar advice will apply to other open water destinations whether that's in Bath or when you're away.
