At the House of Lords on Monday 4 February, The SU Bar & Events team celebrated their Gold Best Bar None National Win. Award winners from various schemes around the country gathered for a drinks reception hosted by BBN chairman Lord Smith.

For over 15 years Best Bar None has been working with the alcohol industry, police, and local authorities to promote responsible drinking and higher licensing standards in bars and venues in 70 towns and cities across the UK. Backed by the Home Office, Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, said: “People should be able to enjoy a night out safely and responsibly without the fear of being a victim of alcohol-related crime and disorder”.

The Best Bar None awards scheme is run by NUS and assesses Students’ Unions for the range of policies, training, and practices that promote a safe and inclusive environment for students.

Illuminated by the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye in the distance, Mike Dalton, SU Bars & Entertainments Manager and Mark Whelan, Deputy Bars & Entertainments Manager toasted the exceptional efforts they put in to student safety in SU venues.

Mike said: “It’s so great to be recognised for the work we do in making The SU bar and club a really safe place to be.”

“We work hard on our training for staff and are constantly looking at ways to improve and enhance our offer whilst sharing our knowledge with others.”

“We have strict policies on entrance, limit drinks deals, and support schemes such Good Night Out and Ask Angela that make nights out safer and more enjoyable for all.”

“This year we have been forming close relationships with local bars and nightclubs as part of the #NeverOK campaign to help promote Bath as a safe city for a night out.”

Alison Inch, Commercial Development Manager at NUS, said: “This is an outstanding achievement and everyone at The SU Bath who works hard on a daily basis to put their excellent policies and procedures into action should be very proud of the accreditation they have achieved”.

The SU runs The Plug bar, The Tub club, and the newly acquired Flo’s Café.
