Do I need a driving license?
No! For most of our events no license is required.
Do I need any equipment?
Either the Club or Motorsports Venue will provide you with all the kit you need - but if you have your own kit you're more than welcome to use it. Check out our gallery to see the customised race suits we have available to purchase at certain times in the year!
What if I've never been karting before?
We welcome everyone, from total beginners up to Formula 1 drivers! We’ll make sure that you’re teamed up with an experienced member of the club at our social karting events to get you up to speed.
What is the BUKC?
The British Universities Karting Championship is a national karting competition against 54 other universities. Racing in two-stroke, 70 mph Club 100 karts, the BUKC is an opportunity to compete in some of the fastest karts in the country. We will run trips to test days to try the karts out before the season starts, during which there is a two-tier championship and a 24 hour race in June!
I'm not very experienced, can I still race in the BUKC?
In short, yes! There are two divisions in the BUKC: ‘Mains’ and ‘Rookies’. Our teams for the Mains rounds will be selected based on speed and experience, but we’ll make sure spaces at the Rookie rounds are open to all members at the club!
Isn't it expensive?
It's £30 to join the club (this is the same as all other sports clubs at the university). Being a Students' Union sport, we receive an annual budget which allows us to subsidise events as much as possible, usually offering free transport to and from events as well. We also run a number of free socials, Formula 1 screenings (usually with free food), and events such as marshalling on rallies and sprints. These are free to attend, and you usually get a free lunch! If you think that costs are putting you off, speak to a member of our committee.
Will I fit in?
Motorsports has traditionally been a very niche sport, and that is something we are eager to address. Our members come from all backgrounds, and absolutely everyone is welcome. That is why the club has been awarded the SU Inclusivity Award, particularly for our efforts to support women and international students in motorsport.
Still not sure?
We're always happy to answer any questions you have and will be holding a number of social events in which you can come and meet some of the current members.
