Beginners Course Information

NOTICE TO BEGINNERS (19/20): If you have not attended Week 1 and/or 2 of the Beginners course already, we are very sorry, but you cannot come shoot with us later on. If you haven't bought our membership already, please do not do so, as we will not be running another Beginners course this year. Refunds aren't available.

Any experienced archers looking to join, send an e-mail to us and we will get back to you ASAP.

You must be a member before you can join our beginners course!

Please make sure you sign up to the beginners course as soon as you have bought membership. Places are given on first come first serve basis and if you do not sign up, you will not be allowed to shoot with us. If you are an experienced archer and do not need a beginners course, please email us and we will let you know what to do.

The signups can be found under "Sign Ups" on the left-hand side of this page.

At the start of the academic year the club provides a free comprehensive introductory course, compulsory for all our new members that aren't already experienced archers. Please note you can only attend 1 session a week for the 4 weeks the course runs, but you can choose different time slots each week, whichever time suits you the best. All 4 sessions must be attended if you wish to continue shooting with the club. If you need to change session, contact us using the email address on our home page.

Arrive ~10 minutes before the session begins.

For safety reasons we cannot allow you to shoot in open toed footwear. We also ask that you remove facial piercings and tie back long hair.

Sessions are 90m long, and you will be taught in groups (6-8 people max per group).  All sessions take place on the Sprint Track at the Sports Training Village (STV).

Location

STV is located on the southern part of the campus, behind The Edge by the Arrivals Square. First, you must register yourself at the STV reception to gain free access to the facilities on your library card (this is a quick process so you can do it on the day of your first beginners session). Enter STV, go straight until you see the stairs leading to the floor beneath you. There is the reception. Register, enter the facilities, turn sharp right (so that you have the gym facilities behind your back) and then just go straight until you get to the Sprint Track. That is where our indoor shoots take place.

What will I learn?

A general guide to the course is as follows. You will always be supervised by a leader or Level 1 coach when shooting, and while you are shooting you will get 1-to-1 coaching tailored to you.

Lesson 1

An introduction to archery including a safety talk, archery lingo and a demonstration of Barebow shooting. We will cover basic shooting techniques, introduce the equipment and get you shooting!

Lesson 2

Building on the basic techniques learned in session 1, Barebow aiming techniques will be introduced and used in a game at the end.

Lesson 3

You will be taught how to shoot Recurve Freestyle (with a Sight) technique, and practice this style. There will be a game at the end.

Lesson 4

You continue to learn and practice Recurve Freestyle and some new techniques to improve accuracy. There will be a game at the end.
