Starting university comes with lots of exciting opportunities, but for most new students it also means some big changes: more independent study, new
teaching methods, a much larger department, and probably a few more deadlines than you're used to. There's a lot to get used to in those first few weeks, but you're not expected to figure it all out by yourself; that's exactly why every first-year undergraduate at Bath is matched with a Peer Mentor: a current student in your department who has already completed their first year and can share their experience of studying here at Bath.
As you settle in, you'll meet plenty of people who are there to help, from lecturers and Academic Advisors to professional services staff. Sometimes, though, it can be hard to know who to approach, especially when you're still getting familiar with how everything works. While you can always go directly to a member of staff, sometimes it can be reassuring to chat with another student who has recently been in your shoes. Peer Mentors can answer questions, offer practical advice, and point you towards the right support or service if needed.
Peer Mentors are encouraged to get in touch during the week before Freshers' Week, so keep an eye on your University email inbox before you arrive in Bath. If you don't hear from them
straight away, don't worry. Your department will organise a welcome event during the first couple of weeks of term, giving you the chance to meet your Peer Mentor in person, ask questions, and decide how you'd like to stay in touch throughout the year. If you're unsure who your Peer Mentor is, or haven't yet been connected with them, you can contact peersupport@bath.ac.uk and the Peer Support team will help get everything sorted.
One top tip when you meet your mentor: make the most of their lived experience! Maybe ask how they navigated their first semester, figured out their study routine, or balanced academic work with everything else university has to offer. Peer Mentors play an important role in helping first years feel more confident, encouraging you to get involved, make friends and connect with others, ask questions, and access support when you need it.
Throughout the year, your Peer Mentor will stay in touch, share advice, and help you make the most of your time at Bath. Whatever your first year brings, you don't have to figure it all out on your own <3
With love,
Helen xoxo
