Guide for New Volunteers

This page mainly applies to those who are also joining or thinking about joining St John Ambulance (SJA). While we encourage all BUFAS members to join, it is not a requirement and you are still welcome to come along to our weekly meetings and learn some first aid.

If you are interested in volunteering with SJA, talk to someone on the committee who will send you an online form for you to complete before the deadline.

The Joining Process

We will then hold a selection event on campus, where you will have the chance to talk about why you want to volunteer with SJA and will also give us the chance to know a bit more about you. At the event, you will also have your photos taken for your ID Badges, perform a relatively simple fitness test (held by our Training Coordinator) and have your measurements taken for your uniform.

Once you have "passed" the selection event, we will put you on the required courses to become an Operational First Aider (OFA). These will be held over two weekends in November, and will usually be jointly run with Bristol LINKS. There will also be a Welcome Event, where you will be given a more in-depth view of SJA, and be taught important skills such as Safeguarding and Manual Handling.

Any questions about joining and training courses, feel free to ask anyone on the committee or by emailing su-bufas@bath.ac.uk.
