Welcome to kayaking!!!

We’re the best sports club in Bath (even if we do say so ourselves!). While we spend plenty of time doing exciting things like whitewater kayaking and canoe polo tournaments around the country, we also spend lots of time learning and practising skills in the nice, warm university pool.

So, how can you get involved?

This pool taster session is for women and non-binary people who want to come and try kayaking in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Kayaking has historically been quite male-dominated, and we’re working to change that - just look at our committee! As a club, we run regular women’s and non-binary pool sessions, giving you the chance to learn new skills, get more focused support, and have a good chat about all things kayaking (and life!) in a welcoming atmosphere.

We’re also building a portfolio of female river and whitewater leaders, so there will be opportunities throughout the year to join focused trips and develop your skills further. And, of course, you’re always welcome to join our usual club sessions, trips and socials too!

What to expect

  • All abilities welcome - whether you’ve never been in a kayak before or have paddled for years.

  • Taster sessions are held in the university pool in the STV throughout Freshers’ Week and the following two weeks.

  • Bring a swimming costume, shorts and T-shirt to wear in the pool, plus a towel and change of clothes for afterwards.

  • Meet outside the STV entrance 15 minutes before your session - look out for the paddles!

  • Before getting in a kayak, the university requires everyone to complete a swim test. We’ll run this at the start of the pool taster session. You’ll need to:

    • Swim two lengths of the pool (100m total)

    • Tread water for 5 minutes

    • Climb out of the pool unassisted
