Frequently Asked Questions

Are you open to beginners?
Yes! We are open to all shots, whether you are an experienced shooter or have never picked up a gun before, we can accommodate all levels of abilities. All you need to do is join the club and sign up for a shoot! We also have stands at the Freshers and Refreshers fair every year so come and find us!
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST BUY A MEMBERSHIP FOR ACCESS TO SHOOTS AND THE MEMBERS WHATSAPP GROUP!
What should I and shouldn't I wear / bring?
We have no formal dress code at the club but we do have prohibited clothing and mandatory footwear. In addition you do not need to bring any shooting equipment but you are more than welcome to bring your own. You should not bring your own ammo however as our grounds require the use of ammo bought on site.
Please remember this is an outdoor acitivity so dress appropiately for the day and bring clothing that can cushion the kick of a shotgun to the shoulder if you are a beginner.
Please only use the following footwear options:
Dark coloured trainers
Outdoor boots
Wellies
Prohobited clothing:
No bright colours
No camo
No puffer jackets (safety issue)
No leggings
How often do you shoot?
We typically run one weekly session every Wednesday afternoon and if there is the demand, we host the occasional Saturday shoot. This is as well as several other competitions and events throughout the year.
How do I get to the shooting ground and can I bring my car?
We offer transport to and from the grounds as part of the day. If you have a car you will be fully compensated for all petrol, so please let committee know ASAP if you have a car at University. You will also be able to come to every shoot without needing to sign-up.
What should I do if I have a shotgun license?
If you have a shotgun license please let committee know ASAP. Our club is only able to function thanks to those who carry shotgun licenses, and you will recieve priority on shoots and at competitions.
What do you shoot?
We organise sporting clay pigeon shoots only. For clarification, clay pigeon shooting involves shooting clay targets released from traps, using shotguns. We are NOT a rifle club and cannot unfortuantely offer this discipline, nor do we offer game shooting in any form.
How much is it?
Shooting with the University of Bath Shooting club is just about the cheapest way you can ever shoot. We have an agreement where cartridges and clays are discounted, so shoots usually cost £20 per 25 clays. The club has its own guns so gun hire is free! For competitions, the club provides cartridges for free so the only cost is competition entry.
Can I borrow a gun?
Yes! The club has a variety of guns, including 12 Bores and 20 Bores, which can be used for free under the close supervision of the more experienced members.
Do you enter competitions?
Yes! We enter several inter-university competitions throughout the year, which are primarily inter-university competitions at Durham, Bristol, St Andrews, Cardiff, Liverpool, Oxford Brookes and our own Bath Invitational. Everyone is welcome to join in the competitions and there is a variety of experience and skill levels present. We do not participate in BUCS however. Competitions happen roughly 2-3 times in Semester 1, and 2-3 times in Semester 2.
Where do you shoot?
Our two main shooting grounds have been Mendip Shooting Ground and Barbury Shooting School, with the former being the most common one we visit. You can find more about the grounds we visit at the links below:
Can I bring my own gun?
Yes you can! If you have your own gun and would like to store it on campus, we have space available in our club gun lockers. Please contact us by email to arrange storage.
Is there club clothing I can buy?
Yes there is! Every year the club organises a kit drop made up of a branded gilet (Schoffel or Aubrion), a fleece and multiple other items of clothing. This drop is done in mid-November and only happens once a year, so make sure to get in while you can! See the Kit page for photos of our kit and order links when it gets dropped!
How can I sign up for a shoot?
You can sign up for our shoots on our signups page here. We aim to have sign-ups live by Sunday night for Wednesday shoots. Be sure to keep up to date with WhatsApp gc or Insta stories to see when signups are announced.
For any further questions just shoot us an email at: su-shooting@bath.ac.uk, DM us on Instagram at @uniofbathshooting, or contact a committee member via WhatsApp through the shooting group chat.
