Intermediates

Being an intermediate windsurfer means you can rig your own kit, uphaul the sail and sail wherever you want to go. You can competently sail upwind without a daggerboard and are starting to get used to planning and are starting to flap your feet around in the general direction of the footstraps.

We will still teach what you want to know and help you progress in general, it’s up to you how far you want to go. In particular we will make sure you have the appropriate skills to go down to Weymouth and windsurf on the sea and go and have some serious blasting fun.

Other than using bigger sails and smaller boards, intermediate sailors are able to hire brand new 2019/2020 kit from the Official Test Centre in Weymouth. Previously, the club would hire their kit for £50 per person per day and then subsidise half of this, making the cost to you £25 per session which is an absolute bargain. However, due to COVID-19, the SU's budget, and therefore our budget, is heavily restricted and so we may not be able to keep this offer during the 2020/2021 academic year.

Weymouth is a great place to advance your skills, the water out from the OTC is very shallow for quite a way out, making launching and landing really easy. Weymouth is the sailing centre of the UK and one of the most reliable spots for good wind (especially when a storm is blowing through), even in the howling wind the water is pretty flat in all wind directions because the bay is protected by sea barriers.

If you have you have your own kit then you can go down whenever the wind blows, all you need to do is contact a committee to organise a lift.

At SWA events there are clinics for specific skills that you can add to your arsenal. You can also compete in intermediate individual racing, team racing (which is mixed skill teams of 3) and freestyle competitions.

At BUCS Nationals there is an intermediate fleet.
