Your guide to joining a group!

Disclaimer! If you’re interested in joining a Sports group, see our Sport Officer Emily’s blog.

Joining a group is one of the best ways to make friends, find your community and gain a sense of belonging. We have over 160 groups to choose from, ranging from Departmental, Faith and Cultural, Recreational, Arts, Volunteering, Media, Diversity and Support and more!

You can join a group at any time during the year, so even if you discover something new during semester 2, you still have the opportunity to get involved.

With so much choice, it can be daunting to figure out what to do, but don’t worry! With this guide, you’ll be able to join as many groups as you want!

Step 1: Societies Area Membership

Psst... You can join a Diversity and Support group without getting the Societies Area Membership first!

To join a group, you'll need your Societies Area Membership, a one-off £3 membership which gives you access to all groups for the whole year!
Press the ‘Join Now!’ button circled in red below.

Step 2: Add it to your cart

You’ll now have been redirected to a new page. To continue, ensure the ‘Quantity’ option is set to 1 and press the ‘Add’ button.

Step 3: Your basket

Once you’ve pressed the ‘Add’ button, a light blue box with the text ‘Item added’ will appear in its place. From here press the basket button in the top right corner of the page.

Step 4: Proceed to checkout

If you’re happy with the contents of your basket, you can now press the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ button.

Step 5: Purchase the membership

You’ll now need to enter the details for your billing address and your payment details as prompted.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to provide a photo of my address and card details, even though it pains me not to.

Step 6: Confirmation of purchase

Once you’ve purchased your membership, you’ll end up on a web page showing your transaction details. You’ll also receive an email receipt of your purchase to your University of Bath email address.

Step 7: Choosing your group

Now that you’ve purchased your membership, you have access to every group. Have a browse of the website to find one that you’re interested in!
For more information about each group, click on their logo to see what they get up to throughout the year.

Step 8: Joining your group

Once you have chosen the group you’d like to join, go to their page and press the ‘join’ button. Some group memberships may require an additional purchase, but the vast majority are free to join!

Step 9: Back to your basket

Once you’ve pressed the join button, it should say, ‘Added to Basket’. From here proceed to your basket as before via the button circled in red.

Step 10: Proceed to checkout

Once you’re happy with the items in your basket, press the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ button.

Step 11: Product customisation

You will now be prompted to choose whether you are a ‘Returning’ student or if you will be ‘Maintaining Distance’. Choose the option that you feel represents you best based on the description on the page. From there press ‘Continue’.

Step 12: Final checkout

You’ve now done all the steps required to get your membership. From here simply press ‘Confirm’. If payment is required for the group membership, you will need to enter your payment details at this point.

Step 13: Enjoy!

Congrats! You’ve now acquired your group membership! Go out and enjoy all the activities our groups are putting on to your hearts content!

Most groups will advertise their events through their socials such as Instagram or WhatsApp, make sure to give them a follow and keep an eye out for any new events they put on.
