Candidate for the position of Education Officer

Chloe Page

About Me

Hi everyone! I’m Chloe, one of the candidates for Education Officer. I’m a 21-year-old Social Sciences student in my final year at Bath. I’m originally from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, and I am an ambassador for a mental health charity.

During my time at Bath, I have been actively involved in the SU and all things academic. I have represented your voice as an Academic Rep for two years, and I’m also a Departmental Rep this year. In addition to that, I am a Council/Senate/Students’ Union Rep, so I’ve had the opportunity to take your views to the University senior management team. I have a real passion for your education, and I am determined to make a difference and improve your Bath experience! My experience and enthusiasm are what make me an excellent candidate to be your Education Officer.

Outside of university, I love to travel and explore, get involved with environmental causes, go to music concerts, and I’ve recently taken up ballet.

I’m so excited to talk to you during campaigning, please come and say hi!

#go4chlo – Vote Chloe for Education

If elected, my top priorities would be:

  • Diversify and reduce assessment to make sure you’re being tested in the right ways and to ease exam-time stress.
  • Get a broader range of employers on-campus to represent careers and placements in all disciplines
  • Lobby the university for more learning commons and a library extension, while ensuring that existing space is used more effectively
  • Bring more technology into the classroom so your lectures and seminars are more engaging and collaborative

Manifesto

I believe I can make the changes you want happen, and I’m committed to ensuring you get the most from your education.

If elected, I would address:

Assessment and Feedback

  • Students are over-assessed, often in inappropriate ways. Diversifying and reducing assessment is a necessary change.
  • Ensure printing costs are covered by the university when paper copies of dissertations must be submitted.
  • Ensure a minimum standard of detailed and timely coursework feedback is set across the university, with comments added throughout. You should receive a definite date to expect feedback upon submission.
  • Secure access to exam scripts with detailed personal feedback for any student scoring below 50%.
  • more effective communication system so concerns are heard and amended as they arise. Academic Reps should be more visible with quick and efficient ways to raise issues and feedback to you.
  • More open Student-Staff Liaison Committees so you can all be involved with changes to your departments, and learn what’s changed through surveys and online unit evaluations.

Placements

  • Procure on-campus presence from a broader range of employers, appealing to all disciplines at Bath for placements and graduates. There’s a great range from corporate industry, but humanities are left underrepresented.
  • Monthly contact from your department and placement tutor so you’re up-to-date with course changes and placement deadlines.
  • smoother transition back into university life after placement through workshops and inductions to recap information and aid you through final year.

Personal Tutors

  • Continue the reorganisation of personal tutoring to ensure tutors communicate with you and help your development, while able to signpost you to the best student service for pastoral support.

Space

  • Secure more learning commons, adapted to the diverse needs of the disciplines at Bath.
  • Continue the lobby for a library extension and for more buildings to be open for study during evenings and weekends.
  • Ensure better use of existing space. The large corridors and number of power sockets in CB could provide 50 additional seats with the provision of more stools.

Technology

  • Encourage the increased use of Panopto so you have these vital resources available for revision.
  • More interactive teaching through clickers, smartphones and other tools, providing a collaborative platform to brainstorm and share ideas in real-time, while giving lecturers instant feedback to adjust the pace and content of the course to suit you.

TEF

  • The Teaching Excellence Framework is happening and fees will rise. Students should not have to accept the current academic issues, and the University must give students greater value for money. You deserve more, and I will lobby the university for breakdowns of spending so you know where your money is going.
