Jam Sessions
Our Jam Sessions give confident jazz players the chance to build their improvisation and small-band skills in a relaxed, social setting, at venues on campus and around the city.
Each session opens with a short set from the house band. Attendees can sign up to play throughout the evening, and the coordinator then groups players by instrument and forms bands on the spot. Each band picks a tune and plays two or three numbers before handing over to the next group. Real Books and iRealPro are available to make choosing tunes easy, and Real Book standards are recommended where less experienced players are involved. Solos should be kept reasonably short to keep the session moving, and the night closes with a final set from the house band.
Sessions are aimed at intermediate or more experienced jazz musicians who have improvised in a Big Band, jazz band or other ensemble. You should be comfortable reading lead sheets, soloing over chord changes and playing in a small group. If you're newer to improvisation, our Beginner Jam Sessions are a great place to start. Bring your own instrument. Drums, piano/keyboard, guitar and bass amps, microphones and music stands are all provided.
