April Society of the Month:

Choral and Orchestral Society (ChaOS)!

Congratulations to ChaOS for being chosen as our Society of the Month. ChaOS are a very active society and have held many events over the year.  Here's what they got up to during April:

Big Band

Bristol joint gig:

After the success of our 'Jazz at the SU' gig with Warwick University Big Band, we decided to team up with Bristol University Big Band for a night of music at Strangebrew, in Bristol. We worked with the Bristol big band committee to organise the event, strengthening our inter-university bonds for future years.

Cheltenham:

Big band had the privilege of being invited to play at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. We opened the event as the first performance of the festival and were able to enjoy exploring the town and watching the rest of the festival. This was big band's first time playing at a festival, and will hopefully open the door for more opportunities for the band moving forward.

Orchestra

On April 27th, the ChaOS Orchestra held a captivating concert featuring works by Richard Wagner, Max Bruch, and Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky. The first half was particularly exciting, opening with Richard Wagner's "Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," which delivered a dramatic and epic musical experience. This was followed by a masterful performance of the Finale to Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor by soloist Timothy Tso, who demonstrated exceptional skill and careful interplay with the orchestra.

After a brief interval, the orchestra returned to present Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, often referred to as the "Symphony of Fate." The symphony was performed to an outstanding standard, culminating in a powerful rendition of its main theme in a major key at the very end of the symphony.

Well done, ChaOS! Great engagement with the community and worthy winners of our Society of the Month accolade for April 2025!

March Society of the Month:

Bath Marrow!

Bath Marrow had an outstanding March, combining outreach, fundraising and collaboration to support their partner charity, Anthony Nolan, and raise awareness about stem cell donation. They ran their Superhero Week campaign (3rd - 7th March) partnering with Tennis, Golf, Dance, and Crochet societies to register new donors during training sessions - reaching students beyond the usual stalls.

Their creative Slip & Paint fundraiser with Taylor Swift Society and Fine Art Society, and a fun pub quiz with Crochet Society, helped raise awareness while bringing communities together. Two committee members, Kaite and Oliver, ran the Bath HAlf, raising an incredible £1,233 in support of Anthony Nolan.

Throughout the month, the team consistently ran weekly donor recruitment stalls at the STV and the Library, where they created a friendly, informative atmosphere for students to learn and sign up.

In collaboration with the Islamic Society during Ramadan, they raised awareness of the need for greater ethnic diversity on the stem cell register - making their impact both meaningful and inclusive!

Bath Marrow's ongoing efforts show the power of student collaboration in driving change, saving lives, and fostering an inclusive and informed community, making them March's Society fo the Month!

Well done, Bath Marrow!

February Society of the Month:

Backstage (BTS)!

Backstage has had a monumental month, playing a crucial role in bringing live events to life across campus. In February alone, members rigged, crewed, and derigged 11 different events, including major cultural performances that celebrated diverse communities at the university. Their technical expertise and dedication have enhanced both student and society run events on an incredible scale.

A key highlight was their work on BUSMS' production of Legally Blonde, one of the boggest shows of the year. Months of planning, design, and technical preparation went into bringing the production to life. Theo, David, and the set team designed and built an intricate set, incorporating flown signs to replicate automation effects. Matt managed the sound team, ensuring 40 cast members were heard clearly with just eighteen radio mic packs. Aidan and Grace designed and programmed the lighting rig, while Jacob, as Deputy Stage Manager, coordinated lighting, sound, and stage cues to ensure seamless performances. Jenni led the stage crew as Stage Manager and the entire event was managed excellently by Technical Event Manager Asher. Their teamwork and technical expertise made Legally Blonde a true standout production! Here you can also watch Backstages' Legally Blonde Vlog!

Well deserved, Backstage!

Bath Univeristy Student Theatre (BUST)!

BUST had quite a few events happen during November, including their Fresher's Show "Brush with a Body" performed in The Weston and their school show, "That Pesky Rat", performed at Twerton Infant School. They were also running weekly Wednesday workshops too!
