Meet the Coaches

Our performance teams and recreational sessions are almost entirely coached by student volunteer coaches. Each year, we run a coaching mentorship scheme for students interested in coaching and joining our wonderful team of dedicated coaches here at the University of Bath. Meet some of our Coaches below!

Women's First Team Coaches

Matthew Williams & Wee Li Khor

This season, the Women’s 1st Team will be led by coaches Matthew Williams and Wee Li Khor, who bring energy, experience, and a shared commitment to fostering a driven, team-focused environment. Matthew, a Level 1 Volleyball England Coach, returns after serving as assistant coach last year while competing for the Men’s 1st Team. Khor, a familiar face from his years coaching the Women’s 3rd Team, also played for the club and showcased his leadership on court with the Men’s 2nd Team last season. The Women’s First Team has long been held to high standards and continues to be a strong contender in volleyball competitions across the UK, consistently demonstrating excellence both on and off the court. Together, they aim to support each player’s development–both as a volleyball athlete and as a well-rounded competitor. They are excited to build through a season of growth, collaboration, and passion for the sport.

Men's First Team Coaches

Anna Fertig & Rochelle Doel

This season, the Men’s 1st Team will be led by coaches Anna Fertig and Rochelle Doel, two experienced and passionate volleyball players who bring both talent and dedication to the squad. Anna, who assistant coached the Men’s 1st Team last year, and Rochelle, who held the same role with the Men’s 2nd Team, are both key members of the University’s Women’s 1st Team and hold the Level 1 Volleyball England Coaching Qualification. Having grown up playing volleyball from a young age, their love for the sport is matched by their drive to develop players and push the team to new heights. After an outstanding 2024/25 season that saw the Men’s 1st Team crowned Southwest League Men’s Premier Division Champions, BUCS Men’s Conference Cup winners, and BUCS Western Division 2 winners, Anna and Rochelle are eager to build on that momentum as the team steps up into a higher BUCS league, aiming to surpass last year’s achievements and set new standards of excellence.

Women's Second Team Coaches

Brian Liew, Siwoo Ryu, and Ethan Wan

The Women’s 2nd Team will be guided by a closely knit group of coaches: Brian (Breezy) Liew, Ethan Wan, and Siwoo Ryu, three exciting players who have worked together in the Men’s 2nd Team last season. These coaches have various experiences in volleyball, having grown up in different environments and under different coaching systems, but they all share the same love and passion for the game. The Women's 2nd Team has been held to a high standard throughout the past few years in the University of Bath Volleyball Club, and the coaches are in every intention to continue and excel on this legacy.

Men's Second Team Coaches

Thomas Stringer & Artyom Martynyuk

This season, the Men’s 2nd Team will be coached by Thomas Stringer and Artyom Martynyuk, the middle-setter duo known for their impact on court with the University’s Men’s 1st Team. Both players were key starters during the past two seasons, earning multiple MVP awards and helping the squad achieve an undefeated run in BUCS and the Southwest League Premier which they hope to carry into the second team. Thomas has been competing in volleyball for over five years and is currently completing the Volleyball England Coaching Course. His experience has seen him assist with coaching several university teams, with a particular focus on developing setters across the program. Artyom brings high-level playing experience from both the UK and Singapore, having represented the University in indoor and beach volleyball. Last year, he placed third at the BUCS Beach Championships, and he now looks to share the lessons of the past two seasons while drawing on his leadership background as a former army officer to help strengthen and inspire the 2nd Team. Together, Thomas and Artyom are determined to build on the momentum of the 1st Team’s successes in the Southwest League Premier. Their goal is to guide the 2nd Team toward a league title challenge while fostering teamwork, developing player skills, and instilling a lasting passion for the sport.

Women's Third Team Coaches

Josh Tabakov, Daniel Hope, and Leonard Amoabeng

This season, the Women’s 3rd Team will be guided by coaches Josh, Dan and Leonard. As a trio they aim to bring energy, experience, and plenty of personality to the squad. Josh, who supported the W3s in their first season in Bristol League Division 1 last year, returns with valuable insight and a strong connection to the team. Leonard and Dan, meanwhile, are not only pivotal as players and coaches but also incorporate fun, welcoming personalities that help shape the atmosphere of the wider club.

The coaches previously played with the Men’s Indoor 3rd Team; Dan has spent his time at Bath playing as a libero and will introduce his defensive prowess to the W3s, whereas Leonard started as a middle and has switched to opposite allowing him to share extensive offensive knowledge to the team. Josh spent last year focusing on Beach Volleyball to further widen his expertise and deepen his knowledge.

After a promising debut season that ended with a strong 4th place finish, the W3s are eager to build on that momentum. We aim to sharpen fundamentals and once again prepare players to step up to higher-level teams in the future. Above all the goal remains the same: to keep improving, compete hard and once again be the most fun team with the best vibes in the club.

Men's Third Team Coaches

Pia Jaspersen & Sean Featherstone

This season, the Men’s 3rd Team will be led by coaches Pia Jaspersen and Sean Featherstone, who bring a unique blend of experience and skill to the squad. Pia, stepping into the role of lead coach this year, coached the Men’s 3rd Team last year and has taken valuable insights that have shaped her understanding of the best coaching approaches for this skill level. Her coaching is informed not only by her tactical knowledge but also by her playing ability - she has played competitively for the university for the last 2 years as a libero with excellent defensive instincts, consistently providing stability and control on court. Sean complements this perfectly as a middle blocker, bringing incredible strength in both blocking and attacking, creating a coaching duo whose contrasting styles balance each other and offer the team well-rounded technical guidance. Pia and Sean are determined to push the players to achieve their best and set new standards for success.

Men's Fourth Team Coaches

Shean Liu, Andrew Tan, and Sino Lam

The Men’s 4th team will be coached by Shean Liu, Sino Lam and Andrew Tan this year. They have each had their experiences playing competitively alongside with and outside of the university and have a genuine passion for the sport. Shean has played as a libero for the Men’s 3rd team and has built a solid grasp of the game’s fundamentals. Sino brings a no-nonsense defensive mindset to the team. He represented the Men’s 2nd team as a middle last year, developing a strong net presence by combining timing, positioning, and defensive instincts. Andrew has been playing volleyball for 3 years and was the middle for the Men’s 3rd team 2 years ago. Although currently injured, he has a solid understanding of the fundamentals which will hopefully be shown through his coaching. Inspired by the 1st place finish by the Men’s 4th Team last year in the 2nd Division of the Bristol League, the coaches are hoping to emulate this performance and bring out the potential of all their players and make sure their passions of volleyball continue to burn bright.

Women's Development Team

Matilde Sousa & Sophie Nordmann

This year, the women's development team will be coached by Matilde Sousa and Sophie Nordmann. Having played together in the women's 2nd team last year, as an outside and a setter, they aim to provide a diverse and complete volleyball experience, using their different specialisations as an advantage. Sophie and Matilde have different volleyball backgrounds, but they both know how important it is to have a solid foundation, which they now wish to pass on to their athletes. Above all, they will create a friendly and welcoming environment to help players develop their volleyball skills, preparing them to potentially move up to a competitive team in the future.

We can't wait to meet you all and have an amazing year -  Matilde and Sophie x

Men's Development Team

Martin Choi, Hans Chung, and David Lam

This season, the Men’s Development Team will be coached by Martin Choi, Hans Chung, and David Lam. They are committed to creating a supportive environment where players can grow both technically and personally. Martin previously captained the Men’s 3rd Team as an outside hitter, David served as captain of the Men’s 4th Team also playing an opposite hitter, and Hans gained valuable experience as the setter for the Men’s 4th Team. Together, they bring a broad mix of leadership and playing backgrounds that will help newer players strengthen their fundamentals while also preparing them to take on bigger challenges in future seasons. They believe that development volleyball is not only about building skills, but also about fostering teamwork, confidence, and a passion for the game. Their goal is to ensure that every player in the squad enjoys the journey, learns something new each week, and feels motivated to push themselves further.

Skills Sessions Lead Coach

Miranda Garcia Perez

This semester Miranda will be leading the Volleyball Skills Session every week! Miranda has been involved in the club in so many ways over the years — from being on committee, coaching, and refereeing BUCS matches to playing herself as both a libero and now an outside hitter. She brings a wealth of experience and a real passion for helping others grow in the sport. For Miranda, volleyball is not only about strength and technical skill, but also about being clever and strategic on court. Therefore, she will bring a variety of skills into the club this year!  She especially enjoys creating an environment where players can sharpen their skills, build confidence, and feel ready to enjoy the game even more.

Coaching Mentorship Scheme

Our coaching mentorship scheme serves to develop interested players into fully-fledged Bath Volleyball student coaches. Each year, mentees apply and are selected to participate in this scheme. Throughout the year, mentees shadow a current student coach during trainings, learning how to set goals for a team and how to organise sessions to achieve them, and many more essential coaching skills. At the end of the year these mentees will have the skills to coach their own Bath Volleyball teams in future!

You don't have to be a pro-athlete to coach a team. You just need determination and passion. As a club, we work with our student coaches to match their preferences, whether it be time commitment, teams or coaching style (individual coach or co-coaching set ups).

If this is something you are interested in, or have any questions about how our mentorship scheme works, please shoot us a message on Instagram or at su-volleyball@bath.ac.uk
